Fur + Honey Moon & Book Club

February 11th, 2019

In the modern world of streaming-dominated music consumption, there are a few standard ways that artists tend to rack up the numbers. They’re either signed to a major label, who have the leverage and cash to get them all up in people’s eye-lines; they’ve managed to nab a lucrative spot on a New Music Friday playlist, or they’ve made friends with Hugh Jackman and wound up on ;The Greatest Showman soundtrack. Rare, however, is the track that
climbs into seven-figure streams just by virtue of being very, very good. And even rarer still is the occasion when that happens to a virtually unknown indie band. ‘If You Know That I’m Lonely’, the jangling, sepia-tinged and 60s-inflected bop released by Brighton quartet FUR last autumn, however, is currently sitting at over 3.6 million Youtube views.

It’s had no car commercial sync deals and no Ed Sheeran endorsement; the only boost its been given is an initial backing by Jager Curtain Call – the collaboration between Jaegermeister and UK publication DIY Magazine, who first funded the recording of the track. Amusingly, coupled with an aesthetically-pleasing, Wes Anderson-esque video that cost “about £100 to make”, this probably gives the song the most cost-effective money: stream ratio on the entire platform. When we released it we were hoping that get to 20,000 in a couple of months, but then one day it started going up,” remembers singer Murray. “Since then,100% changed everything. not just people saying &;cool video and sharing it; alot of these people are buying our records and merch and have adopted us as their new favourite band. We in a time where it's still a fairly recent thing for a Youtube video to build something like that, so for a band to find their fanbase this way is really cool.

Formed just over three years ago in the seaside town that the band – completed by guitarist Harry, bassist Tav, and drummer Flynn – still call home, FUR might not have expected this sudden change of fortune, but their ambition and determination was there from the start. Meeting initially on a Freshers internet forum, Murray and Harry had formed the basis of the group and began writing before they even started their first day of uni. When finding other flatmates, meanwhile, their only requirement was that they play either drums or bass. I was very aware that going to a place like Brighton would definitely allow you to do the band thing, explains the singer.

“So when me and Harry met each other we thought, let get it
started as soon as possible so were not wasting time.”

With a full quartet on board, they began to pen tracks based equally in the ‘00s indie they’d grown up with and an increasing rekindled interest in the older music they’d always known from home & started off [influenced] by The Strokes and The Cribs, who are another band
we all really adore. But as we kept on writing, I found myself really enjoying and being really good at tapping into that [other] place,” explains Murray.

So then it was a case of looking at what sounded like FUR and getting that balance where it doesn’t sound like a band from the ‘60s, it sounds like if a & band were doing something modern.” Harry notes:For some reason, even when we only written two songs, we already knew what FUR sounded like.” Heading into the release of their debut EP, following recent single ‘What Would I Do?’ (itself already up to half a million views, FYI) what FUR sound like currently is a band capable of penning a particularly nostalgic strain of guitar music but making it sound fresh again. Taking the age-old love song trope and reinvigorating it, theirs are tracks that feel familiar and classic but with a vibrancy that’s entirely new. “The three most written-about things are love, money and sex.

One I’m not that comfortable writing about, and I don’t have that much money, but everyone’s felt some feeling of love and there’s something powerful about that,”the singer states. It’s the strongest emotional connection I can have with a song.”So far, this outlook has earned them critical plaudits from tastemakers such as Steve

Lamacq, as well as gaining them support slots with a truly diverse set of artists including Miles Kane, The Brian Jonestown Massacre and London crooner Matt Maltese – who they’ll shortly be heading out on a full tour with. FUR have also found that their music’s been
resonating in more places than just their homeland, too. "I think the one thing we really appreciate is people telling us we have a fanbase in places we never expected. Indonesia has become a big thing, and when people in Peru say there are whole groups of people out there that love us, that amazing,” says Flynn before Murray chips in: “And there been so much fan art. That when I think, what going on?! When you see someone whos spent
like, six hours drawing your face…”

It’s a fair point, but with an ever-increasing group of supporters already on board and a forthcoming EP set to cement their excitement, FUR better get used to a little healthy adoration. When we all think back to where it started with ‘If You Know That I’m Lonely’, doing it on such a shoestring and seeing where we’ve got to now from that, it’s mad,” sums up Murray.

You sense it’s probably just the beginning…

Nottingham trio Kagoule are pleased to reveal their new single ‘It’s Not My Day’ today, which is out now on all good digital service providers. The track is the latest single from forthcoming LP, Strange Entertainment, set for release on 26th October 2018 on Alcopop! Records. With some time away from the spotlight to consolidate their early achievements and think about the direction they were heading after parting ways with their previous label, Strange Entertainment sees the band finally spinning together their disparate influences into a record that attempts to capture the sum of their parts, and is very much a statement of where Kagoule are pleased to find themselves artistically now they’re at the helm of their own destiny.“We always felt this pressure early on to decide what type of band we were going to be and this record is an exercise in our self-confidence as a band by being all of them at once,” comments front man Cai Burns“We think we’ve written an album that doesn’t have a direct comparison in guitar music. Lyrically, I think this album is much more mature. I’ve found myself writing songs as a healing process for certain events or to capture moments that I don’t want to forget. I still mask them in fantasy for the fun of it but the topics of each song are more personal and the lyrics far more direct.”Completed by bassist Lucy Hatter and drummer Lawrence English, the band are disarmingly relaxed about their success to date. Previously sequestered in Nottingham and for the most part unaware of the growing buzz around the band, following the critical plaudits and acclaim heaped on their 2015 debut Urth, Kagoule were wholeheartedly adopted by the flourishing Brighton rock scene. However, the trio found themselves wary of being consumed by it entirely, keeping their distance and taking from it what they felt the band needed to grow.“We were all very young and I think we allowed ourselves to be mollycoddled a bit too much. It took a few years for us to realise we had to take control of it for ourselves,”continues Burns “Urth was very much an ode to grunge I think. Although I maybe didn’t realise at the time, when I listen back the early 90’s influences are plastered all over it. Since then we’ve branched out on what we listen to and a huge amount of different influences have crept in. With the guitar playing I wanted to take it more into the post-punk world. The bass lines are groovier and the drumming is just straight up weird.”New album Strange Entertainment was produced by MJ Hookworms and mixed by Tarek Musa from Spring King in two separate sessions “because we ran out of money”, admits Burns in typically honest fashion “Working with MJ was great. He understood where we were coming from and instantly knew we didn’t want to be balls out rock music – he put forward some great ideas for the songs and his input made a big difference to the record.” It took the band another year or so to scrape together funds for Musa’s mixing sessions, but Burns insists the results were worth the wait,“Tarek did an amazing job working with something he hadn’t recorded himself. We’d recently been on tour with Spring King so I think that really helped him know what to do with it sonically.”
For more information please contact Jamie Otsa at Wall of Sound PR –jamie@wallofsoundpr.co.ukIn a time where Burns himself admits that he’s unsure as to whether the political climate has been good for music or not, the album is indicative of a pervading sense of lack of direction and unease among the younger generation. “Great creativity is part of trying to make change,”he says “but I can’t see anyone trying that hard to change anything. I think a lot of people are feeling lost and the youth especially are struggling to see a future for themselves.”Taking musical cues from the likes of American composer and polymath Arthur Russell, and drawing influence from science-fiction and fantasy storytelling for his lyrics, Burns says that the new album is a celebration of trying to achieve something fully realised and artistically ambitious on a shoestring budget. Written on a single acoustic guitar, demoed on GarageBand, and worked up by the bandto the finished studio product, Strange Entertainmentis a very modern record with a thoroughly classic mindset.“I wanted to write songs that stood up for themselves in the most simple of forms,”Burns expands on the process “I think there’s something beautiful about restrictions in music, and I’ll always prefer a lo-fi attempt at a big idea. When I’m not playing with Kagoule I tend to play folk music; Bert Jansch, John Fahey, that kind of thing. Strangely enough a lot of thatfolk guitar seeps into Kagoule riffs but I don’t think it’s too noticeable.”As with the faltering first steps of any new band, the last few years have been a whirlwind of strange new experiences for Kagoule, but with the advent of Strange Entertainmentwe find a band who are finally feeling as though they’ve come into their own with a new sense of purpose, and a sharpened focus on exactly what makes them tick.Whether it was playing after The Dandy Warhols at a festival on a tiny island by the sea in Norway; appearing at Glastonbury; being attacked by a gang of quad bikers on the motorway; sharing stages with Johnny Marr, The Wytches, Iceage, METZ, Sebadoh and Drenge; or achieving acclaim from Rolling Stone, NME, Guardian, BBC 6Music, BBC Radio 1 -it’sall been a steep learning curve, but a thoroughly enjoyably wild ride.“Being in a band is full of those crazy moments,” reflects Burns on their journey so far “The band is all we know! We’ve done it for so long now, I couldn’t imagine not being in it. It’s like a second family and I think nothing can break that.”The band have enjoyed previous press support across the board from DIY, The Line of Best Fit, Clash, Kerrang! Magazine, Upset, Dork, Punktastic et al, with previous singles hitting the Evening Playlist on Radio X twice in a row—including two live sessions for John Kennedy—plus an addition to the Amazing Radio B list, and spot plays from BBC Radio 1 and BBC Radio 6 Music

Prepared to publish what a second album entails and what a long trajectory entails, Holy Bouncer has again achieved what they were looking for, a union of sounds that start from the strident guitars and bathed in effects and Fuzz with some “heavy “rhythms and sounds inspired by rap and hip- hop. Trying to seal this union under his name and the great influence of bands like White Strypes, Tame Impala, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, MGMT Gorillaz, Daft Punk … They experiment in a sea of synthesizers and sounds with- out too many concessions to the easy palates , and full of surprises with twists and unpredictable rhythms.

At the end of 2014 they released their first EP, entitled “La- dies & Gentlemen”. Since then, they let us try a piece of what is their first album with “Anticipation” (December, 2015), and “Hippie Girl Lover”, to give way to their ALBUM DEBUT, enti- tled “Hippie Girl Lover”, which has come out in September 2016, which has helped them to start a path throughout Spain, Europe and even China. Between 2017 and 2018 they hold their second EUROPEAN TOUR with the publication of three new singles: Mightly Mad, Coyote and Sunrise and making way for their second full-length work entitled “Holy Bounc- er” introduced by their new SINGLES “BLINK OF AN EYE” & “MAMIHLAPINATAPAI”.
