IVW: The Lucid Dream + Valkarys

February 2nd, 2019

As spirited outliers in the UK’s psych scene, bullish resolve has seen The Lucid Dream continue to rise in acclaim, as they’ve broken beyond repeat performances at Liverpool Festival Of Psychedelia to live action all across Europe, praise from Mojo and Uncut magazines, and repeat plays across the board on BBC 6Music. After writing sessions over the summer of 2017 using the classic Roland 303 and 808 synths as writing tools, the latest step in their evolution sees them return with 4th album Actualisation, soaked in the influence of acid house and amalgamated with the dub and kosmische hues of their more recent output. The Lucid Dream have completed their 4th album in 5 years, and it’s a record made for the dancefloor.

“The Lucid Dream are rapidly becoming major players in an ever-increasingly crowded psych scene… utterly seductive.” – The Quietus

Bassist Joe Lally and drummer Brendan Canty—the rhythm section of Fugazi—team up with experimental D.C. guitarist Anthony Pirog for an economic, emotionally resonant instrumental power-trio record.

The music of Fugazi presented a series of overlapping conversations—between punk and funk, aggression and experimentation, the personal and the political. And those internal tensions became manifest in the frisson between the band’s two caustic yet complementary voices: the blare of Ian MacKaye and the sneer of Guy Picciotto. But if Mackaye and Picciotto were the de facto stars of the show, then bassist Joe Lally and drummer Brendan Canty were the directors in the control room engaged in their own off-mic dialogue. In their 16 years together as Fugazi’s rhythm section, Lally and Canty developed a personality of their own every bit as distinct as the band’s dueling mouthpieces. When you think of any given Fugazi song, often the first thing that comes to mind is the band’s authoritative but mischievous sense of groove.

So when you hear the stalking, bass-powered backbeat that kicks off the Messthetics’ debut album, it’s like listening in on old friends shootin’ the shit. The Messthetics is Lally and Canty’s first venture together since Fugazi went on hiatus in 2003, after which Lally decamped to Italy for the better part of a decade, while Canty became an in-demand soundtrack composer, side player for Bob Mould, and frontman for the short-lived art-pop outfit Deathfix. But if their rhythmic repartee in the Messthetics is the same as it ever was, it serves as the foundation for a dramatically different construct than Fugazi. While Fugazi fearlessly embraced un-punk influences—dub, piano balladry, musique concrete—shredding was not one of them; they were so self-conscious about indulging in a little guitar noodling that they gave their song with lots of arpeggios the tongue-in-cheek title of “Arpeggiator.”

With the Messthetics, Lally and Canty defer to Anthony Pirog, a dexterous guitarist and a mainstay in the Washington D.C. avant-jazz scene, who’s given free rein to unleash his six-string splatter atop Lally and Canty’s propulsion. But lest that combination suggest a post-hardcore version of Surfing With the Alien, the album is more an instrumental power-trio record that values economy and emotional resonance over technical wizardry and structural complexity.

Free Cake For Every Creature is a soft pop band currently based in Philadelphia. Beginning in upstate New York in 2012 as the recording project of songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Katie Bennett, the band has since expanded to include a rotating cast of friends and musicians. For the newest collection of songs, The Bluest Star, Katie, long-term band members Francis Lyons and Heeyoon Won, and many friends spent the second half of 2017
slowly recording tracks in various rooms in Katie and Francis’
apartment on a busy street in West Philly. While these songs are a return turn to Katie’s comfortable home-recording beginnings, they also lay the foundation for a growing project based on collaboration,
experimentation, and intentional arrangements. With specificity and honesty, Bennett sings about friendship, love present & past, and the painful process of letting people out of her
life.

On very rare occasions, from the most destructive of places, beauty can emerge. Ever since singer Tali Källström and guitarist Rhodri Daniel met as “two strangers with disparate tastes and influences,” the two have been carving out a body of work that resembles an essence of chaos and beauty; a feeling of estrangement, an expression of morbid elegance, inspired by opposing sides. The funny thing about opposites, is they need each other in order to exist – one wouldn’t be what it is without the other.

From this place of tension, Estrons found their debut album. Ultimately, the bind that ties them is their love of creating fresh, exhilarating music, and with ?You Say I’m Too Much, I Say You’re Not Enough?, they’ve done just that.Beginning as an experiment, Estrons quickly became significantly more important than intended. They are simply aforce that cannot be forced.

With its off-kilter rhythms, angular guitar work and clashing atmospherics, the album is both arresting and thrillingly disorienting – a fitting sound for a band of “highly driven, frustrated, volatile people.”#

Vocals and instrumentals collide together throughout, creating a wild, beautiful noise – likely mirroring the self-confessed love/hate relationship between Rhodri and Tali, tied together by bassist, and long running producer,Steffan Pringle, whom they eventually convinced to join them. Despite the odds, they have captured a sound of their own. Estrons’ music “can be off-putting at first glance,” says Rhodri. “It’s only when you make your way through it that you get it. I have no time for music that doesn’t leave some sort of a mark.” And nor, evidently, does he make it.

Wakefield / Leeds quintet Mi Mye will release new single ‘That Night in Thurso’ taken from their new album ‘The Mountain forces the Future, and the Force causes the Rain” on the 2nd of November.
Centered around Highlands-born, and Wakefield-based songwriter Jamie Lockhart, Mi Mye are a close-knit group of five musicians (Emily, Chad, Morgan, Jamie & Rob) scattered across Leeds and Wakefield as well as various bands and musical projects including Crake, The Spills, Buen Chico and others. The quintet recently released their fifth record ‘The Mountain forces the Future, and the Force causes the Rain’ on their own label Coble Records, the next step in a journey that has seen the band build a dedicated following over the release of five records and along the way becoming critical darlings. Their tender, hopeful and beautiful music finding support and fans across BBC 6 Music, The Line of Best Fit, Gold Flake Paint, Clash Magazine, BBC Introducing, The 405, Drowned In Sound and many others. Their recently released new album ‘The Mountain forces the Future, and the Force causes the Rain’ takes its name and theme from two mountains very close to where Jamie grew up in Skerray in the Highlands of Scotland, ‘Ben Loyal’ and ‘Ben Hope’. One day while observing these, Jamie started to think about the overwhelming powers that shape how a person develops, being loyal to what your loved ones believe and the realities of having and holding hopes and dreams. New single ‘That Night in Thurso’ is a beautiful rumination on the idea of being an ‘incomer’ and what it means to make somewhere your home. Jamie explains, “Now I live in Wakefield I am considered to be Scottish, but when I grew up in Scotland I was considered to be the last-born son of an incomer, and I romanticised the idea of moving somewhere where I was not that and could belong. But now I'm in Wakefield I romanticise the coast and the environment that I came from. So, in my mid to late 30s I spend a lot of time thinking about being somewhere else, or dreaming of something I've done before, but meanwhile I’m ignoring things I could do to make this place better now. Or we are all ignoring it and deciding it’s not our time or place or problem, and all sit with our backs to it..”
Mi Mye will also be hosting one of their customary and much-loved Christmas parties in Wakefield on the 15 th of December at the ‘7A Project Space’ in the city with their Christmas set forming part of Long Division Festival’s launch of ‘Manifesto For A New Wakefield’.
Mi Mye’s new album and tickets for their Christmas special are available now from www.mimye.com Praise for ‘The Mountain Forces The Future, And The Force Causes The Rain:
"Mi Mye offer subtly contemplative, emotive music that grows in stature with each listen. One can only hope that this record is something at least approaching a breakthrough.” – Drowned In Sound ”Mi Mye are able to surge into new areas, incorporating personal and often quite unexpected, experiences. A
mature, nuanced return” – CLASH

“A poignant setting which combines exceptional storytelling and an intricate instrumental, this one is a must
listen” – Narc

“An album that feels like it was made for a simple love of songwriting and feels intimate and important as a result, it’s simply the best Mi Mye record yet” – For The Rabbits

"A fragile voice emoting what it is to be human in both the big and little things” – The Arts Desk

East London folk band Stick In The Wheel are headed by singer Nicola Kearey, and guitarist/producer Ian Carter. Known for their fierce, raw delivery, this is culturally and politically switched-on music, with the group widely commended for their timely appraisal of English Folk. They reconnect modern audiences to the past, drawing unexpected parallels between then and now. With four BBC Folk Award nominations, their debut “From Here” (2015) was fRoots’ Album of the Year and a MOJO Folk Album of the Year.

Their Second album Follow Them True is an UNCUT 2018 Album of the Year and were cited as the UK’s most exciting new folk band. They continue to question the notion of what folk music is, and what it means in 2018, expanding the radical sound of their debut whilst remaining totally connected with the tradition.

The sold-out album launch at London’s Borderline cemented their reputation of being at the forefront of the English folk resurgence, and live highlights this year included the main stage at Cambridge, Port Eliot, Shambala & Frank Turner’s Lost Evenings II weekend at the Roundhouse.

Having recently released their debut MIXTAPE ‘This and the Memory of This’ which features collaborations with Lisa Knapp, Om Unit and Anna Roberts-Gevalt, Stick In The Wheel continue to push boundaries with energy, passion and intensity.

“Precision folk with anger, lust and blood” The Guardian ????
