Stick in the Wheel + Burd Ellen

October 19th, 2018

East London folk band Stick in the Wheel are headed by singer Nicola Kearey, and guitarist/producer Ian Carter. Their debut From Here(2015) was fRoots magazine ‘Album of the Year’ and a MOJO ‘Folk Album of the Year’, with four BBC Folk Award nominations since their inception in 2013. Known for Kearey’s fierce, authentic delivery, this is culturally and politically switched on music with its roots firmly embedded in the genre’s traditional, working-class heritage.

Their second album Follow Them True is out now. The songs within examine rituals and cycles, our inherent power to change ourselves and the world around us, the past repeating itself, ghosts and death, land and place, thieves and beggars. It continues to question the notion of what folk music is, and what it means in 2018. The new album expands the radical sound of their debut to include electronic and found sounds, yet at the same time remaining totally connected with the tradition.

“Anyone who has seen SITW live recently will know just what a diamond-hard machine they have become” Songlines 5*
“Britain’s most exciting new folk band” Uncut
“Powerful—and deeply relatable” Pitchfork
“Precision folk with anger, lust and blood” 4/5 The Guardian
“Snapping crocodile clips onto the knackers of working-class folksong, giving it new life and fresh intent” Long Live Vinyl
“Urgent, uncompromising, intelligent – Stick In The Wheel are the bristles on the clean broom the UK folk scene badly needs” 4/5 Record Collector

L.A. Salami (Lookman Adekunle Salami) is a singer/songwriter from London, England known for crafting magnetic blues-rock songs with a postmodern twist. Salami was fostered when he was two months old and grew up between his birth mother in Peckham, South London and his foster family in Broadstairs on the English coast. Much of his teens and early twenties were spent on the move, rarely settling in one place for more than few months at a time. It was this lifestyle that provided him with a unique insight about life in the city, something that he would later use to fuel his songwriting, both lyrically and conceptually.

His love for music began when he first heard Bob Dylan on the radio, subsequently leading him to explore more blues and folk music and inspiring him to write his own songs; unfortunately, however, he could not afford his own instrument and wasn’t introduced to one until he was given a guitar for his 21st birthday. After three months of soul-searching, tapping into different creative avenues, and sleeping rough, Salami eventually had his first few songs written and set out to land some gigs. Success soon came knocking after relentless gigging, starting with a tour support slot for Lianne La Havas in 2012.

His performances were met with a resoundingly positive response, ultimately landing him a spot on the roster of independent London label Camouflage…

Paul Cherewick, monikered Paul Cherry, came up during Chicago’s garage rock golden age of 2014. Despite being in the thick of the DIY scene with up and coming bands such as Twin Peaks and The Lemons, Paul would abandon the all too familiar lo-fi rock sound of his first EP “on Top” and spend the next 2 years exploring the nuances of jazz and pop, finding his footing with a new sound. Paul Cherry has completely reinvented himself on his upcoming LP, Flavour. The first single, “Like Yesterday” sets the tone for the record as a brilliantly written, mid-tempo pop ballad. It would fit nicely as a modern addition to Paul McCartney’s “Ram” or Todd Rundgren’s “Something/Anything” or even Player’s “Baby Come Back.” Paul Cherry crafts melodies on Flavour that sit at the intersection of 1970s yacht rock and Ariel Pink’s lo-fi dream pop. Lyrically, Cherry touches upon millennial culture with references to love in the modern age, phone culture, and giving a conceptually new light-hearted twist to age old themes of love lost, missed connections and polar political climates.

The Velveteers are an American Rock outfit from Boulder, Colorado
that is the epiphany of punk with the aggressive sound and grungy wisdom.

that transcends through the Siren like power of Demi Demitro’s (frontwomen/lead guitar) voice. Through fuzzed out guitar riffs and thunderous drums they lure their audience with vibes that come right out of a classic horror flick. In 2016 at just a year old and not even an ounce of music released, The Velveteers embarked on their first tour supporting Los Angeles duo Deap Vally, playing sold out theaters across the UK. Since then The Velveteers self-released their first six-song EP in February of 2018 and have been touring around the USA and will be returning to the UK in October.

Soul, sass and sparks collide to create one of the most exciting female singers of our generation. Blending rock ‘n’ roll and blues influences with a hypnotic brood and incredible musical talent; Emme Woods has curated a truly bespoke 60s sound that bangs the drum for everything that’s great about the Scottish music scene right now. Simply put, Emme Woods is an original. Emme Woods is feminine + ballsy, grungy + angelic, sultry + brazen and all the while with a strong grasp of the lonely-hearts club.

Previously performing under the moniker “Five Cousins”, Freakwave built up a considerable following in Glasgow, this much was made clear when their maiden display as Freakwave at Celtic Connections sold out in January. Prepare to be whisked away by some intoxicating vocal performances, which, backed by some woozy instrumentals.

Beoga + Morrissey & Marshall

October 10th, 2018

Beoga (Irish for ‘lively’) have been in existence for fifteen years, and in that time they’ve produced five critically acclaimed albums, been shortlisted for a Grammy and performed with the Ulster Orchestra at the BBC Proms. They are described by the Wall Street Journal as ‘the most exciting new traditional band to emerge from Ireland this century’.

2017, was something of a banner year for Beoga as they co-wrote the massive international hit ‘Galway Girl’ with Ed Sheeran and performed with him to 150,000 people at Glastonbury, taking them to a new audience and a new level. Ed has once again asked the band to support him and they are looking forward to being onstage at his Irish dates in May: Páirc Uí Chaoimh in Cork, Boucher Playing Fields in Belfast, Pearse Stadium in Galway and the Phoenix Park in Dublin.

With an album release in the near future and more tour dates in the diary, 2018 looks set to be another hectic year for Beoga.
