Easy Life are a Leicester five-piece whose early material explores that push and pull between the promise of a simpler existence, and the hedonism or temptations which occasionally threaten to get in the way. Singer and front-man Murray first met the band’s bassist and sax player, Sam, at school in the Midlands, where they bonded over a mutual love of early hip-hop, funk and jazz. Having signed up the rest of the band on the local scene, they soon began to write songs as Easy Life, mixing these more transatlantic influences with elements of indie, punk, and the less-exotic realities of rainy middle England (all in-between menial part-time jobs spanning TK Maxx and clinical trials to plucking turkeys or selling potatoes).

The first fruits of this labour proved to be ‘Pockets’, which Easy Life describe as a “93 BPM head-nodder born out of the need to give a middle finger to those people who don’t believe in simplicity, and are only concerned with material wealth and all other vices that have made modern living that little bit less sweet. It essentially documents that terrible sinking feeling of realising you can’t quite afford to pay this month’s rent due to your own stupidity; an unsettling emotion that is unshakable, too familiar and hangs over us like a dead albatross.”

Confident and charismatic, ‘Pockets’ is an instant introduction to an exciting, escapist new band, and a timely reminder that those lives lived fully also rarely come easily.

Olden Yolk is a New York-based group whose penchant for dystopian folk, abstract poeticism, and motorik rhythms have enveloped them in a sound uniquely of-the-moment yet simultaneously time-tested. The project is led by songwriters, vocalists, and multi-instrumentalists Shane Butler and Caity Shaffer, whose interlaced vocals are found guiding each composition on their enlivening self-titled debut. The project was initially conceived in 2012 by Butler as an outlet for one-off songs and visual art while touring and releasing albums with the band Quilt (Mexican Summer). Following the release of a split-record with Weyes Blood in 2014, Olden Yolk became a collaborative entity.

Their debut full-length, slated for release in February 2018 (Trouble in Mind), ruminates on questions surrounding love, self-doubt, and locating autonomy amidst burgeoning unrest. Wrought with hazy melancholy and halcyon joy, Butler and Shaffer’s lilting vocals play off one another through a devotional dialogue, taking form in haunting choral melodies and candid rock n’ roll. These songs are ecstatic odes to the life of the city; to the subway platforms, kiosks, and monuments which enliven and encompass our collectivity, elevating into an urban-psychedelia.

On the album, Butler and Shaffer are joined by drummer Dan Drohan (Tei Shi, Uni Ika Ai) and guitarist Jesse DeFrancesco who round out the studio sessions and live-band. Drohan’s deep passion for jazz, hip-hop, and experimental percussion come to fore while Defrancesco’s minimal yet powerful guitar ambiences are heard swelling in the peripheries of each song. The album was recorded at Gary’s Electric in NYC by Jarvis Taveniere (Woods) with co-production, electronics, and mixing by Jon Nellen (Ginla, Terrible Records). Other guests, such as multi-instrumentalist John Andrews (Woods, Quilt, The Yawns) and violinist Jake Falby (Mutual Benefit, Julie Byrne), add to the mercurial nature of the record, creating a landscape tinged with beatific songwriting and transgressive underpinnings.

New Zealand four-piece The Beths channel their longtime friendship into high-energy guitar pop with a smart lyrical bite. Guitarist, lead vocalist, and primary songwriter Elizabeth Stokes and guitarist Jonathan Pearce attended high school together before meeting up with longtime mates bassist Benjamin Sinclair and drummer Ivan Luketina-Johnston at the University of Auckland, where all four studied jazz. After gigging together in a variety of configurations, the quartet came together for a project exploring the pop and rock sounds of their youth. Everything clicked, and The Beths were born.

Their debut EP, 2016’s Warm Blood, overflows with explosive guitar riffs and infectious indie-rock hooks. Produced by Pearce and featuring all four members on joyful vocal harmonies that recall the best ‘60s pop, tracks like ace lead single “Whatever” and impossibly catchy standout “Idea/Intent” earned the all-killer, no-filler release rave reviews from the New Zealand music press.

2018 promises to be a breakout year for The Beths. A beloved live act across Australia and New Zealand, the band will tour the U.S. and Europe as the Carpark re-release of Warm Blood gets audiences beyond the bottom of the Pacific Ocean hooked on their ebullient sounds. Their freshman album, Future Me Hates Me, also produced by Pearce, arrives later this year; fans of artists like Sleater-Kinney and Best Coast should remain on high alert for the first full-length from their new favorite band.

VIXXXIONARY
A small collective of musicians and DJs active in the Glasgow music scene, including nights such as Shoot Your Shot. Driving electronic dance music fronted by Bonzai Bonner.

POLIS
With their teeth cut on various flips of the Glasgow synthpop, noise, and avant-garde coins, blast onto the collective consciousness outta nowhere like a cosmic prime mover, combining punishing psychedelic Yamaha synth sequences and fragile Lechitic r&b vocals. They sing lyrics about religion, immigration, butts, abstract art, romance and nonsense. POLIS sound like the ringing in your ears after you’ve tripped up on Byres road, you’re lying on the ground, brain shite gushing out your skull… and there’s a car passing by playing Katy Perry.

If you haven’t yet heard James and the Ultrasounds, or seen them live…Do yourself a favor and strap in…Brash, yet thoughtful with unpredictable guitars, soulful organ and pummelling, yet danceable, Memphis-Style rhythm. The four piece rock and roll band is the brainchild of James Godwin, a long-standing face in the Memphis music scene.

Godwin & Co. take you on a ride that blends Garage, Soul, Punk,Surf,Country and good ol’ Memphis Rock and Roll. There isn’t anything quite like them in Memphis or anywhere else.

On the heels of successful tours in the U.S. and Europe behind their debut LP “Bad To Be Here” on Memphis’ own Madjack Records, as well as releases on Memphis-centric 7″ label Misspent Records, James and The Ultrasounds find themselves poised as one of the breakout acts from the Southeast in 2018.

The upcoming follow-up LP on Madjack records, 2018’s “None OF The Above” (produced by John Paul Keith) serves as a new testament to the band’s prowess, as well as Godwin’s vaildity as a songwriter. The latest 45 on Misspent Records, “I Get The Shakes” b/w “Apocalyptic Love” highlights Godwin’s early roots as a 4track/lo-fi enthusiast.
