Beginning in 1991 with infamous psych-rock provocateurs The Brian Jonestown Massacre, Matt Hollywood has trodden many musical paths over the last two and a half decades.

From deceptively accessible BJM standouts like Not If You Were The Last Dandy On Earth and Maybe Tomorrow, to the tripped-out folk pop of The Out Crowd, and the hazy elegance of Rebel Drones, Hollywood’s songwriting has wandered through multiple genres, the playful experimentation always grounded in a core of earnest emotion. Drawing on such diverse influences as Cohen, Hazlewood, Morricone, Gainsbourg, and classic blues and country,

Hollywood is returning to the road with music from his upcoming WavePOP Records release, as well as some old favorites and never-heard-live rarities.

Alexander Tucker (Grumbling Fur) + Quitter & Moonsoup

August 29th, 2018

PCL Presents
Alexander Tucker  (Grumbling Fur)
Broadcast, Glasgow
Wed 29th August

++ Quitter & Moonsoup

On Sale Now: https://www.seetickets.com/event/alexander-tucker/broadcast/1242660

There is a distinct otherworldliness to Alexander Tucker’s art. Psychedelic without ever resorting to tropes of the genre, it’s the subtle thread connecting every aspect of his output, from the vibrant and hypnotic avant-pop of Grumbling Fur, his duo with Daniel O’Sullivan, to extended drone collaborations with Charlemagne Palestine and Stephen O’Malley, to his beautiful yet strangely unnerving paintings and comics.

Continuing to carve out a space as one of Britain’s most forward-thinking songwriters, on Don’t Look Away, Tucker displays distinctly honest vocals with subtle shifts through unexpected variations.

Don’t Look Away contrasts traditional song structure with experimental collage and rich orchestral arrangements. Viewing Don’t Look Away as the final part of a trilogy, alongside Dorwytch (2011) and Third Mouth (2012), Tucker explains, “the composition across these three albums feels like a move away from my earlier records towards something clearer and traditional but still maintaining my love of manipulating source material into new shapes and forms.”

‘Sisters and Me’ employs a simple palette of plucked guitars, bass, and Tucker’s free-floating baritone voice. A repetitive piano is the unexpected foundation for the cascading guitar and rising melody of ‘Boys Names’. These arrangements allow Tucker’s songwriter skills to truly shine. Between structured songcraft and deconstructed arrangements, Tucker weaves psychedelic compositions employing bright finger plucked guitar figures, driving electronic beats and stately cello patterns. Tucker employs tape loops and repetition on the glowing drones of ‘Gloops Void (Give It Up)’, featuring Nik Void (Carter Tutti Void / Factory Floor), and brings in warped vocal samples on the swirling, ritualistic album closer ‘Ishuonawayishanawa’.

Recorded over an extended period in London and mixed in Daniel O’Sullivan’s Dream Lion Studio, Don’t Look Away emerged during a particularly prolific creative period for Tucker. The album finally came together while Tucker was in Zürich composing for the Schauspielhaus Zürich, and while he was establishing UNDIMENSIONED, his own publishing imprint as an active member of London’s wildly creative independent comic scene. As a result, Tucker’s wider work feels more present here than on previous recordings and this shows itself often in the lyrics, which range from relationships, including the uncomfortable ones we often have with ourselves, to sci-fi imagery and cosmic horror.

The musical landscape of Don’t Look Away is illustrated on the cover’s hand cut collage, created by Alexander Tucker. Viewing each aspect of his artistic output, be it visual art, comics or music, less as separate disciplines but more of as part of one connected whole – Tucker studied at the Slade School of Fine Art and has always drawn comparison between the layering of paint and the layering of sound – he explains: “The worlds I evoke through sound sit alongside the imagery within my comics, drawing and paintings. There is a melancholia and sadness about the transitory aspects of our earthly lives, alongside a fascination with the beauty and inexplicable nature of existence.”

The unknown explored in his visual art is adventurously traveled on Don’t Look Away. The music, lyrics, and artwork all work in tandem to conjure a universe that feels as fantastical, and mysterious as it does familiar and warm.

*The Otherness* are a young rock collective from Comodoro Rivadavia, La Patagonia (Argentina).
Martin, Gonzalo, Agustín and Pablo started to play together by the end of 2009. They’ve toured Europe and Latin America and now they’ve just published their self-titled debut album.

Hailing from La Patagonia, “The Otherness” are aptly named. Why so? In a reversal of the British invasion tradition, where bands such as the Rolling Stones and the Beatles enlightened North America on the bluesy US roots of Rock n Roll, The Otherness tour tirelessly in the UK, bringing their own homespun ‘other’ brand of British and European rock music back to its source with a clear message.

In the few years that they have played together, they have honed a very clear and proficient style of short, sweet and punchy tracks that usually don’t exceed three minutes.

“Argentina is a country where people really believe in rock n roll. Watching The Otherness live you can see this – they are on the tightrope between The Beatles in Hamburg and the Ramones first album – that purity of vision and they are damned good at it. The Otherness are touring UK with a fantastic feedback from the young rock and roll, pop and soul British audiences all over the country.” (John Robb)

The Otherness debut album
“This album is a beatific celebration of everything that is good about Rock & Roll -unfettered joy, glorious freedom, unself-conscious revelry in the thing you love. ‘The Otherness’ is an album of defiance, of dazzling skill… is the sound of a band creating music that is ten times the sum of its parts. Your heroes may have let you down, but with bands like this emerging, the future is in good hands.” (Reyt Good Magazine)

PRIMO are Xanthe Waite, Violetta DelConte Race and Suzanne Walker. As a trio from Melbourne writing up-tempo, terse chorus and verse, Primo make use of two guitars, drums, sound effects and a group vocal sensibility to ornament their enquiries into deconstructed punk and indie rock. Their songs chime and charm, sounding at times bountiful, at others brittle, always buoyant with attention to detail.

‘Amici’ is Primo’s debut album, following on from their split 7″ last year and a cassette of early work entitled ‘Primo Cassetto’ from 2016 on Hidiotic. ‘Amici’ was recorded and mixed by friend Al Montfort through 2017. The collected songs reference the 40-hour working week, the city, bureaucracy, walking, a mirage and a ghost. In form the songs are short and purposeful, “leaving footsteps in the snow” much like the protagonist of their wistful invocation to ‘Daphne’.

Primo take you from A-to-B with their songs, from the appetite of another place to the bird’s eye view. ‘Family Dinner Club’ deals with anonymity and suburbia, whilst ‘Ticking Off A List’ admits “there’s a fogginess to some beauty, you look outside, I can’t know what you see” before urging us to take to the footpath. ‘You’ve Got A Million’ races all over town, whilst ‘Closed Tomorrow’ talks of a “a car going by, one day out of life, going home or to another man-made space”. These songs are alive and inquisitive, chasing down questions for answers long sped-away, amidst minimalist shuffle beats and ringing-out chords. ‘Amici’ is a triumph of the underplayed, its small details pull focus, allowing the album to treat us to unexpected truths in plain sight.

A message from Dale:

“My name is Dale Barclay, I am 32 years of age. I have grade 4 Glioblastoma brain cancer, diagnosed December 2017. I have had one craniotomy which removed 90% of the initial tumour. After that, I did 6 weeks of radiotherapy and 6 months of a clinical trial alongside chemotherapy. My tumour has two mutations which make it rarer than average (had to be!). The cancer has returned. The fight continues with the power to face it raging in me.

There is no doubt, whatsoever, that I’ll be living with cancer for as long as I am alive. However time pans out, it’s here, it’s now and it’s not going anywhere. The NHS have been stellar, true heroes – too many to mention. They have done everything in their power for me, but my treatment from here on out is going to cost money. I need specialist care. I am officially a customer. This is the reality.

So, on to the point, I am asking for your help. All contributions will be greatly and deeply appreciated by me, my wife and my team. I do not stand alone and it gives me tremendous strength.

All monies raised will go toward the cost of my treatment.

LOVE AND RESPECT FOREVER AND ALWAYS,

Dale Barclay”

Ewen White Accordion) and Alasdair Mackenzie (Guitar & Vocals) both grew up in the Scottish Highlands, and spent three years together at the National Centre of Excellence in Traditional Music in Plockton.
