New Zealand four-piece The Beths channel their longtime friendship into high-energy guitar pop with a smart lyrical bite. Guitarist, lead vocalist, and primary songwriter Elizabeth Stokes and guitarist Jonathan Pearce attended high school together before meeting up with longtime mates bassist Benjamin Sinclair and drummer Ivan Luketina-Johnston at the University of Auckland, where all four studied jazz. After gigging together in a variety of configurations, the quartet came together for a project exploring the pop and rock sounds of their youth. Everything clicked, and The Beths were born.

Their debut EP, 2016’s Warm Blood, overflows with explosive guitar riffs and infectious indie-rock hooks. Produced by Pearce and featuring all four members on joyful vocal harmonies that recall the best ‘60s pop, tracks like ace lead single “Whatever” and impossibly catchy standout “Idea/Intent” earned the all-killer, no-filler release rave reviews from the New Zealand music press.

2019 promises to be a breakout year for The Beths. A beloved live act across Australia and New Zealand, the band will tour the U.S. and Europe. Their freshman album, Future Me Hates Me, also produced by Pearce, arrived in August 2018 on Carpark Records; fans of artists like Sleater-Kinney and Best Coast should remain on high alert.

Elizabeth Stokes – vocals, guitar
Jonathan Pearce – guitar, vocals
Benjamin Sinclair – bass, vocals
Ivan Luketina-Johnston – drums, vocals

2018 has been an tremendous year for Tia Gostelow with her debut album “Thick Skin” received incredibly warmly all over the globe. This includes a Triple J album feature and Like A Version, serious global play-listing, sold out shows and invitations to Falls Festival and South By South West. Her single Strangers also just clicked over 2 million streams on Spotify.Tia wrote her debut solo single “State Of Art” in 2015 and was only 16 years old. The song caught the attention of producer Konstantin Kersting (The Jungle Giants/Mallrast) and they recorded it together at Airlock Studios in Brisbane. This was the start of a creative relationship that stuck solid all of the way through the recording process for her debut album “Thick Skin”. Growing up in the regional Queensland town of Mackay Tia was isolated from a tradional music scene. She turned 18 and made the big move to Brisbane in early 2018.This experience has helped define her sound as she is now well and truly part of the Brisbane music community. Tia and her band have played a lot of shows now including supporting the likes of Ball Park Music, Frightened Rabbit, The Rubens and Gomez. Her and her band mates have developed a live show to be reckoned with. 2019 couldn’t look brighter with her National album tour announced and presented by Triple J. Her first tour of the US and LA recording is confirmed for March and plans are in place for a mid year tour of the UK and Europe

Jowe Head is a musician and artist from the Midlands of England, now living in east London. He started his
musical career in his home town of Solihull with various school friends in 1972, a project that came to be
known as Swell Maps. This group, also featuring the late Nikki Sudden and his brother Epic Soundtracks,
emerged in the late 1970s, and are now known as legendary pioneers of what is now referred to as the
“Alternative Rock” scene. They set up their own record label, and mixed Punk Rock with experimental
psychedelic sounds.
Swell Maps released four singles and two albums in a brief but dramatic career, that led to them topping the
UK independent charts, and influencing bands such as Sonic Youth, Nirvana, and Blur. When they broke up,
Jowe joined the Television Personalities, headed by another legend of UK Independent Music, Dan Treacy.
Ten years with the TVPs saw Jowe making more influential records, touring Europe regularly, and playing in
Japan and the USA.
At the same time, Jowe was also evolving his own visual art imagery and practice. Starting from his early
experiments, he completed a degree in Fine Art at Manchester in 1980. As well as many solo and
collaborative exhibitions, he has helped to run a community art centre in his adopted home district of
Hackney, and he also runs art classes in his neighbourhood for disadvantaged young people.
As well as painting in oils and acrylic paint, Jowe’s other main pre-occupations are drawing and print-making.
He also designs his own record and CD covers, and has painted murals, made films, and he also makes
collages, sculptures and clocks using recycled junk.
Jowe continues to make challenging music, and often visits the USA and Europe to play concerts. In New
York, he is usually backed by members of The Mad Scene, who are a local cult psychedelic band, who
revolved around the core of New Zealander Hamish Kilgour (of The Clean), and co-singer Lisa Siegel. He
also plays in the Washington DC area with members of experimental rock band The Plums.
More recently, Jowe has been leader of a band called Angel Racing Food, and also of a band called The
Demi-Monde, for a pair of ambitious albums called “Diabolical Liberties” (2011) and “Tales from the Twisted
Tower” (2013). The recent sound still has a more psychedelic feel, with experimental aspects, plus a more
recently acquired folk element, due to an increasing awareness of traditional English song, and an interest in
acoustic instruments. The recent sets have mainly been original material, mixed with exciting arrangements
of traditional folk songs, and also versions of songs by Joe Meek, Sun Ra, Nina Simone, and film-maker
Ingmar Bergman.
Jowe’s final recordings with The Demi-Monde were under the heading of “Visionaries”, a suite of pieces
about visual artists which have inspired him, such as Joseph Beuys, Louise Bougeois, Hannah Hoch,
William Blake, Joseph Cornell and Kurt Schwitters. This is intended to be part of a larger project, with
contributions from other song-writers and bands.
His latest band is called Infernal Contraption, featuring the voice, bowed saw and Theremin of Catherine
Gerbrands (Valerie’s Week of Wonder), guitars by Lee McFadden (Alternative TV), drums and percussion by
Ravi-Low-Beer, and also sound-effects and guitar by Cos Chapman (Rude Mechanicals).
His other current musical project is called Eleventh Hour Adventists. It’s a collaboration with cellist /
vocalist Sister Jasmine (aka Rotten Bliss). They sing murder ballads and surreal dramas sometimes using
Greek mythology as subject matter, in close harmony. The electronically treated electric cello is a powerful
sonic tool in Jasmine’s hands, and it forms the basis of their unique sound-world.
“Jowe Head spent time in two of the UK’s coolest underground bands: Swell Maps and Television
Personalities…a lovably skewed indie-pop tunesmith.” Time Out New York 2013

“Head draws on cabaret pop, 60s cinema, dinky electronics, industrial noise, and his own multi-
cultural imagination to put together weird ditties.” (Trouser Press, USA)

“The mad genius behind the mad genius of Swell Maps, the band who re-invented music as therapy
for northern neo-depression in the really 1980s. A man of many talents.” (Time Out, London)

Grunge-fuelled indie via London, Galway, and Berlin.“…powerful…” -Dork“…a dreamlike sound that conjures up ethereal imagery.” -Wonderland“…ear-pleasing webs of noise with powerful political ideas.” -The Line of Best Fit“…biting musicality…” -Clash“…waves of heavy percussion and intertwining riffs.” -DIY”…emotional…” -Stereogum“…stunning…” -Noisey“…simply sublime…” -The Line of Best FitWith nods to Warpaint, Ian Sweet, and Sleater Kinney, HAVVK produce a haunting and dynamic soundthat steers the listener from moments of immersive shoe-gaze to thrashing punk rock, all fronted by a soaring, bewitching vocal.HAVVK originally formed in London in 2014, and relocated to Berlin two summers ago. The band initially evolved around Julie Hawk’s solo project which was produced by their guitarist Matt Harris. Wanting to break away from the singer-songwriter niche, they redeveloped as something with more atmosphere, punch, and political edge than before. Their first EP, ‘HAVVK’, was produced by Dimitri Tikovoï (Placebo, The Horrors) and mixed by Catherine Marks (Wolf Alice). Their second EP ‘She Knows’ was self-produced alongside Belfast native Rocky O’ Reilly (And So I Watch You From Afar). Noizze said it featured what “could be the best opening track to any rock release.” In the close of 2017, the band released their double A-Side vinyl, “Can’t Explain // Below”, that juxtaposes the two sides of HAVVK’s distinctive sound. Vents Magazine described the record as a “gritty slice of indie grunge” met with “shimmering delicacy.”Since moving to Berlin, they’ve supported And So I Watch You From Afar and The Drums at The Lido, as well as appearing on stages at Liverpool Soundcity, Other Voices, Hard Working Class Heroes, and The Great Escape. They’vealso performed alongside Bitch Falcon, Wyvern Lingo, The Altered Hours, Party Fears, and Saint Sister as well as touring with BARQ, ELM, and Harbouring Oceans. Amongst their online supporters are Gold Flake Paint, Nialler9, Noisey, Stereogum, Wonderland, DIY, and The Line Of Best Fit. HAVVK’s singles have had air-time on BBC 6 Music from Lauren Laverne, Tom Robinson, Steve Lamacq and Chris Hawkins, as well as appearing on RTE Radio 1, Today FM, XFM, Absolute Radio, 2XM, Amazing Radio, 98FM, and Dublin CityFM.In addition to their own music, the band have also founded their label, Veta Records, working with acts such as Maria Kelly, DYVR, and Sive. In 2017, Julie Hawk co-founded SelfMade, a platform to explore DIY music in Ireland through performance, discussion, and art. She also produced an illustration series, Female Fronted Drawn Together, celebrating women in music.

The Essex Green are a neo-psychedelic pop outfit from Brooklyn, NY, via Burlington, VT. The band is primarily composed of songwriters Jeff Baron, Sasha Bell, and Chris Ziter and
specializes in a classic sound inspired by 1960s–1970s pop and folk in the tradition of bands like The Left Banke and Fairport Convention. Inspired by the psychedelic sounds of the ’60s while adding some lilting folk-rock and the occasional bit of classic country to the mix, the Essex Green were part of the Elephant 6- affiliated scene of the late ’90s.

The band shared members with the Ladybug Transistor for a few years, and like that group, their take on chamber pop was gentle and richly arranged. After recording an album for Kindercore, they released two albums for Merge in the early to mid-2000s, then, after long break from working together, reunited without a hitch and released their latest album ‘Hardly Electronic’ in 2018

BRUTUS

Broadcast, Glasgow

Brutus rage like a maelstrom. They are a meteor shower of sound. This trio from Leuven, Belgium create expansive, stratospheric punk not quite like any other band around.

With post-rock construction, black metal dynamics, hardcore energy, prog and math-rock flourishes and pure pop melodies all detectable on their debut album Burst, Brutus manage to straddle the significant divide between Slayer and Savages, The Smiths and Slowdive, Dillinger Escape Plan and Deus – and all with just three members expertly colluding to make a sound as monolithic as it is emotive.

The searing, soaring guitars of shoegaze are amped up to hardcore punk speed, drums gallop like wild horses over open larval planes and drumming singer Stefanie Mannaerts offers some of the most impassioned vocals heard in recent times, capable of shifting from deceptively melodic to out-right larynx-punishing in the blink of an eye.

In 2014 and 2015 they played mostly all over Belgium. Pukkelpop, Rock Herk, Dour Festival, Boomtown, AB Club, Botanique, Depot, Stuk, Trix, … and more than 100 intense small shows.

In April 2016 Brutus decamped to Vancouver (Can) to record their debut-album Burst with Jesse Gander (White Lung, Japandroids) It was a wise move. Burst is a 21st century rock album: challenging and exhilarating. Colossal. A cathedral-sized noise. A unique listening experience, released by Hassle Records for Europe, Sargent House for US/Worldwide. Brutus are here.
