Retiree is the musical project of three Sydney/ Melbourne mammals: Matt Crowley, Tori Holleman & Marco Vella. Retiree have steadily congealed their broad influences into a unique emulsion of strongly rhythmic and emotional music. From two releases, they’ve been described as “pared back 1980s comfort pop for all occasions” by NOISEY, having “a whole lot of criss-crossing rhythm” by The FADER and containing “swirling synth flourishes, languid wistful vocals and strutting drum machine funk” by The 405.

Retiree have released two 12?s both locally & internationally; Retiree EP (2013) on Plastic World followed by This Place EP (2015) on Rhythm Section International/Plastic World. Following the release of their single Jan in 2017, 2018 sees their return with House Or Home, released by Rhythm Section International.

The album’s songs explore the theme of “house or home” and what that means in present day Australia for different people. They journey from an aboriginal tent embassy on the south coast of New South Wales, a retirement village, a one room flat in Ringwood and a sleepless 17 hour stop over in Malaysia. Their live set throws all their keyboards, guitar pedals and woodblocks on stage, resulting in long-legged convulsing to a drum machine under honest lyrics.

Retiree have teamed up with director Joey Knox and cinematographer Jesse Gohier-Fleet to create a series of interconnected film clips. Unraveling an intricate web of stories, the visuals pair seamlessly with the songs.

House or Home will be released on LP and digital on 21st September 2018.

Bustin’ out of Liverpool, UK, Trudy and The Romance are ready to woo with the mutant 50s pop and self-declared alligator rock-n-roll of their eagerly-anticipated album Sandman. Today (22nd Jan) they preview its first cut, ‘The Original Doo Wop Spacemen.’

The new single drives forth the dreamboat pop of their recent “Junkyard Jazz” EP through its Spector rhythms, whilst incorporating the album’s nods to Jonathan Richman, Louis Prima, Brian Wilson’s wall of sound, film composers Henry Mancini and Bernard Herrmann, and the golden age of Disney. “We directed this like a blockbuster, with characters and a story,” Trudy’s singer Olly explains. “We worked with a pianist, 1940s Disney choir, county pedal steel guitar player, film score violinist and harpist. It’s heart-warming and gently creeps up on you. It’s not tugging but just kind-of-there; Alligator Rock’n’roll!”

Recorded with producer David Pye (Wild Beasts), Sandman draws the listener further into the trio’s colourful world, and follows the latest escapades of its central protagonist, little Johnny, and his inner turmoil. “It’s a coming of age tale about asking for your innocence back. It’s a breakup album and loosely based on the hero’s journey,” Olly says. Rocking and reeling through dreamy harmonies and dazzling guitars it’s everything good pop music should be – catchy, clever and brimming with curiously wonderful characters in Trudy’s inimitable realistic-cartoon narrative.

Including a highlight summer festival performance at Green Man, the band’s live show offers ‘a clutch of weak-knee ballads and twisting hits’. Their recent biggest headline show to date, a sell-out at London’s Moth Club lays down a marker for what’s to come. They’re set to let their unique doo-wop sound loose in Austin, Texas, as an official SXSW showcase act for 2019. There’s also a Huw Stephen’s Maida Vale session under their belts, and ‘Artist of the Week’ recognition from Steve Lamacq.

‘The Original Doo Wop Spacemen’ is out January 22nd with debut album ‘Sandman’ to follow in Spring 2019.

Ulster power-duo combine punch with songwriting panache-Coruscating filthy fuzz!
Classic Rock 8/10

The Bonnevilles are shaking Northern Ireland in a way it hasn’t felt since Van Morrison & Them obliterated Club Rado in 1964 and Stiff Little Fingers blew apart The Trident in 1977! The Bonnevilles don’t so much play punk blues as use it as a spring board to create a completely new genre. The Lurgan duo take Mississippi Hill Blues and Punk Rock and mix into their own unique dark Northern Irish Punk Blues stew.

The Bonnevilles are a no-frills guitar-and-drums two-piece from Northern Ireland who play hard-hitting roots music they call “garage punk blues.” Formed in Lurgan and Banbridge in 2009, the Bonnevilles feature guitarist and singer Andrew McGibbon, Jr. and drummer Chris McMullan. McGibbon was a blues fan whose take on the genre was turned upside down by R.L. Burnside’s raucous collaboration with the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Ass Pocket of Whiskey. After checking out like-minded acts like the Immortal Lee County Killers and the Soledad Brothers, McGibbon decided to start doing some blues wailing of his own. Teaming up with McMullan, the group began playing out and in 2010 released their debut album, Good Suits and Fightin’ Boots. As the band toured in support, both McGibbon and McMullan struggled with the death of a parent, which informed the duo’s second LP, 2012’s Folk Art and the Death of Electric Jesus. As the Bonnevilles continued to tour the U.K. and Europe, they shared stages with the likes of Bob Log III, the Black Diamond Heavies, T-Model Ford, and Kid Congo Powers. In 2014, the band documented its powerful live show with the album Tape Saturation Overdrive: Live in Belfast.

In 2015, the Bonnevilles visited one of the cradles of American blues when they were invited to play Clarksdale, Mississippi’s Deep Blues Festival. That same year, the group struck a deal with Alive Naturalsound Records, an American independent label closely associated with raw blues-rock. March 2016 saw the release of the Bonnevilles’ third studio album (and first for Alive), Arrow Pierce My Heart. The band kept up a busy touring schedule in the U.K. and Europe, and in 2017 Alive issued a collection of early recordings, Listen for Tone, as a limited vinyl-only Record Store Day release. Norway’s Blues for the Red Sun Records gave Folk Art and the Death of Electric Jesus a band-approved reissue on LP in 2017, while the Bonnevilles went back to the studio to cut their fourth studio effort. Dirty Photographs, which added a touch more detail to the band’s rough-hewn sound, was released by Alive Naturalsound in March 2018. ~ Mark Deming

Australian, psych-rock luminaries Stonefield, have hit the ground running with a busy, and very exciting 2019. As they wrap up their first tour of the year, supporting King Tuff on his North American dates, the band has announced they will be entering the studio with King Gizzard’s Stu Mackenzie and Joey Walker for the follow-up LP to last year’s Far From Earth (Flightless), as well as a UK/EU Tour in May and June. The tour includes several festival stops including Desertfest, The Great Escape, Maifeld Derby and Tomavistas.

Their third studio LP, Far From Earth, was released earlier this year on King Gizzard’s Flightless Records via Inertia Music. The release has kept them in demand and on the road, with 2018 tours that included a headlining run in their native Australia, a sold-out leg with Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, a Los Angeles residency at the Bootleg Theater, and a headlining tour of Europe and the UK.

Far From Earth, produced by Black Mountain’s Stephen McBean and featuring Rob Campanella from Brian Jonestown Massacre and Gregg Forman from Cat Power, is the latest addition to an extensive catalog that the four Findlay sisters have been officially releasing since 2010, but a catalog they have been building since the days when they were only as tall as the strange stone formations that surround their hometown in Australia’s rural south-east. For over a decade, the band have seemingly existed within their own stellar nebula; unaffected by fleeting modern musical trends, their sound is a homage to the prog, metal and psych powerhouses of the 70s whilst remaining completely their own.

“These four sisters ooze talent and grit,
an undeniable powerhouse destined for great things.”
– Indie Shuffle

“Seamlessly combines psych, prog, indie rock, and heavy metal…if you’re into the tripped-out, lava lamp-conducive stuff from that era, you’re probably gonna like this too.”
– Brooklyn Vegan

Flamingods are a four-piece, multi-instrumental band from Bahrain & London founded in 2010 by Kamal Rasool and now consisting of Rasool, Sam Rowe, Charles Prest and Karthik Poduval. The group explores and experiments with an array of influences from Western psychedelia, jazz and indie to a wide-eyed obsession with music from the East. Using a vast selection of instruments from the Middle East and Asia, the band marries this with Western instrumentations of synthesisers, guitars and drums to create a potent sound all of its own that they call ‘Exotic Psychedelia’. They have previously released music on an array of reputable indies including Moshi Moshi, Soundway, Art is Hard and Shape and are currently working on their fourth studio record.

The first American group to sign with Deaf Rock Records, the duo Crocodiles released Love Is Here (The End Is Near), their seventh album this year. Electrically charged with time, the album expresses heartbreak and anxiety on a global scale. But with 20 years of friendship and music backing them,Charlie Rowell and Brandon Welchez (creators of Crocodiles) know how to take on adversity: by persevering and banding together to create 10 songs like lightning bolts in a stormy sky.

For those who missed the beginning, and also for those who have nothing to lose by hearing the story again, Brandon Welchez and Charlie Rowell went on tour for the first time about 20 years ago. They left San Diego together in a van with the motor smoking. The van broke down in Arizona where they found another and continued on into the Northwest of the United States. The second van broke down as well, but Brandon and Charlie finished the tour. When they returned to San Diego, they agreed that they enjoyed the experience and were ready to get on the road again.

Around ten years before, the two met each other in San Diego during an anti-Nazi protest and connected over their interests in DIY Punk. Brandon and Charlie were playing in separate bands that would often go on tour, but without a foreseeable future. The two artists craved music and tour life, wanting to travel and make a career for themselves. The duo created Crocodiles in 2008, first to play garage-rock with a cheap synthesizer, but
especially to find the music within themselves. “It’s lucky that we met, because neither of us wanted to play music just for a few years, then find a job and settle down. If you want to be an artist, you have

to do it 100 percent. Life can be hard, you can be broke and deal with tough times, but at least you know you’re alive,” Brandon said of the duo’s beginning. Twenty years of friendship and ten years of Crocodiles later, Charlie and Brandon still haven’t changed their motto. They moved around (Charlie now lives in Paris and Brandon in Mexico), their music evolved, they have produced six albums and switched vans and labels, but the heart, energy and faith are still the same. The groups that have inspired the Crocodiles most, among
others, are The Fall, Sonic Youth, and Guided By Voices. For the duo, these rock missionaries have demonstrated how to advance, grow and hold together without holding back. In the group, Brandon and Charlie play rock, but they also display their lives, served up, album after album.

For their seventh album, everything is in the title: Love Is Here (The End Is Near). The oldest song on the album, Prisoners, was composed in 2015 when Brandon and Charlie were both in the middle of emotional turmoil. Charlie said of the album, “We didn’t have anything planned, but when we put the texts together, we noticed that they often talked about love and hope that only existed because of their opposites, hate and negativity.” Brandon explained, “The theme of the album is how to handle your life after a breakup, the darker
and more painful side of love. And everything that was happening in our lives echoed in the political world: Trump being elected, far-rights rising to power all over the world, the paranoia of this era. Everything seemed dark and hopeless.”

In 2015, Brandon and Charlie were living in New York together, reunited like the beginning of their friendship, and began rocking out in the old-school punk band Flowers of Evil along side members of the band A Place To Bury Strangers. Reuniting and getting back to the basics, the energy and rage from Flowers of Evil had an impact on Love Is Here (The End Is Near). After their sixth album (Dreamless, 2016) with a more pop-electro feel, Love Is Here (The End Is Near) celebrates the return to electric catharsis.

Similar to the era of their first tour, Crocodiles went on tour from the West to the East with their California rock melodies, post summer-of-love (or summer of hate) and the guitars evoke late 70s in New York. The duo recorded Love Is Here (The End Is Near) for three weeks during winter in Mexico with their friend and producer Martin Thulin, in a live setting, with a drummer and a bass player. The songs run through layers of psychedelic fog, full-speed, (Nuclear Love, Love Is Here) or leave a little breathing room (My Far Out Friend, Prisoners). The album is dark with Brandon and Charlie singing of confusion and delusion, but never lost with the offset of strong guitar riffs. Crocodiles is the first American group to sign with the Strasbourg label Deaf Rock. The connection was made while Charlie was producing the latest album of the group The Blind Suns, also signed with Deaf Rock. Everyone got along and the two Francophiles are excited for this new step in their career. Love is here. For the end, we will have to wait a while longer.
