San Francisco band Hot Flash Heat Wave rose to prominence in the Bay Area music scene in 2015 with the release of their Gutter Girl music video, from their debut album Neapolitan, with its accompanying video eventually trending on Reddit. Their versatile sound, at times reminiscent of psychedelia, dream pop, and post-punk, demonstrates a dynamic range of songwriting prowess centered around consistently infectious, sun-soaked melodies and guitar hooks.

HFHW formed in Davis, California as a noise collaboration between Adam Abildgaard and Nick Duffy in 2010, adding Ted Davis in the following years amidst a series of lineup
changes. Renouncing the traditional front-manned format of most contemporary bands, the members instead each contribute songs and share the lead.
Continuing their habit of self-reinvention, the band has generated growing excitement with a series of ambitious new singles from their forthcoming EP Mood Ring, set to release early 2019 on Empire. The new material teases a dreamier, more psychedelic and indulgent sound, and has landed the group spots on playlists like Pollen, Bedroom Pop, New Music
Friday, and All New Indie. Their latest single ‘Sky So Blue’, described as “a cloud-wandering, escapist pop epic, that isn’t afraid of sounding like the aural equivalent of sticking your head
into a candy floss maker” (God Is In The TV Zine, UK) made its way to the Hot Tracks list on the front page of Apple Music. 2019 promises to be an exciting year for the band, as they
embark on their first headline runs around the USA and Europe.

Deeper’s Origins date back to 2014 when prior to releasing any material an abrupt line-up change left the Chicago based band looking for a new direction. Singer and guitarist Nic Gohl
along with childhood friend, guitarist Mike Clawson and drummer Shiraz Bhatti threw out all of their old songs and brought on bassist Drew McBride to round out the lineup. The
subsequent demos leaned on intricate guitar interplay, direct “of the times” vocals and a spirit that speaks to the band’s collective place in this pit of endless internet.
Deeper honed their sound over the course of 2015 & 16’ in basements, lofts, and anywhere that would have them. Touring the demos and landing at a fully realised inflection point.
Call it Post-Punk, call it Indie Rock, it’s a record that steps in and out of boxes filtered through an unmistakable midwestern lens.
As social norms and political ideologies distort, writing and creating art was the only way to control the growing voice in the band’s collective head. The conceptualizing of the album
started and stopped over that two year time warp culminating in a few feverish tracking sessions in late 2017. What was left is a stark shimmering portrait of a modern American
experience.

Some 30 years into his career as a recording artist, Art Alexakis—best-known as the singer-guitarist and sole songwriter behind the iconic alt-rock outfit Everclear—has started a new chapter in his remarkably prolific career, now as a solo artist. Writing all of the songs and performing all instruments on his own, Alexakis is releasing his first ever solo album ‘Sun Songs’ via The End Records on October 11th, 2019. ‘Sun Songs’ finds Alexakis exploring sounds, styles and lyrical subjects outside of the realm of Everclear, his generally rock-focused band.

“For the most part, it’s an acoustic singer-songwriter type of album,” says Alexakis. “It’s not about making another Everclear record; it’s about doing something that’s just me. I’m pushing my ability and pushing the envelope, and having fun at the same time. I’ve always wanted to do something like this.”

Formed by Alexakis in 1992 in Portland, Oregon, Everclear has enjoyed a lengthy career spanning 9 original studio releases, numerous videos, and thousands of shows and accolades that include a 1998 Grammy nomination for So Much For The Afterglow. The band remains active today, most recently issuing Black is the New Black in 2015 and touring extensively around the world. Alexakis also created and performs as part of the annual Summerland Tour, which features a package bill of popular ’90s alt rock bands.

Alexakis’ solo work offers the songwriter a new and somewhat different outlet for his creativity. While the singer-guitarist has always been the driving force behind Everclear, there’s still a sharing of ideas and playing styles among its members that ultimately shapes the music. Contrary to that approach, his solo album finally offered Alexakis an opportunity to create music solely on his own, without any preconceived notion or collaborative influence as to what it should sound like.

“On the other records I’m always playing with other musicians who, even though I’m pointing them and pushing them in the direction I want them to go, they’re still bringing what they bring to the table, so they’re adding to it,” Alexakis says. “Every album that has different players on it sounds different, as it should. I’ve always wanted that with Everclear: to be an amorphous thing that can change and become different things. I’ve never wanted to make the same album twice. That’s why I’m excited about my solo material, because it doesn’t sound like any Everclear record. Not even close.”

A key driver for Alexakis’ solo initiative has been SugarNoise Studios, the work/rehearsal/recording space he recently constructed near his home in Pasadena, CA. The singer-guitarist—who’s also a husband and father—enjoys an inspiring work-life balance that allows him to conveniently create whenever he likes, quickly shifting back and forth between the studio and home. He uses his studio HQ—which is also Everclear’s rehearsal space—to frequently collaborate with co-producer/engineer Stuart Schenk (Invisible Stars), who has helped Alexakis develop his solo material.

Creating outside of the Everclear realm also gives Alexakis the chance to explore styles and sounds that don’t necessarily work for his band. His solo work will continue to push the boundaries of what you can expect from an Art Alexakis composition, as no direction or source of inspiration is really off the table. He cites everything from classic country to hip hop, to the great acoustic singer-songwriters of the 1970’s as big influences for this record.

“I’ve always felt that Everclear is a hard rock/punk rock alternative band with a singer-songwriter,” he explains. “If you look back at the things I like, its rock ’n’ roll bands and singer-songwriters. I like James Taylor and Paul Simon, Steve Earle and John Prine, and at the same time I like super heavy rock. Then sometimes, there are people who kind of combine that, like Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen and Tom Petty. The differences between my solo work and Everclear are the volume and ‘bombacity’, which I still feel I have, but I’m going to express in a different way. It’s going to be loud, but not necessarily with big loud guitars. It can also be loud with words or attitudes or intent.”

Personally, this solo record comes at a time of transition and honesty in Alexakis’ life. Recently, the formidable front man announced his diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis. “The words Multiple Sclerosis conjure up all sorts of images: helplessness, wheel chairs, pain, misery, and worst of all, hopelessness – and pity in the eyes of my family and friends. I remember the night I told my wife, Vanessa, she held my face in her hands, and told me “we got this”, with not a shred of pity or fear in her eyes. I knew then that I wasn’t going to go through this alone.“ After sharing the news with his fans, and the rest of the world, earlier this year, Art Alexakis is in the most honest and vulnerable place he has ever been.

Alexakis has only started to explore his potential as a solo artist, and expects to continue to evolve through the process. The liberating freedom he’s been enjoying since venturing down this new path has expanded his potential musical palette, allowing him to explore a seemingly endless array of ideas. Although he’s not always sure of where those ideas will ultimately lead, one thing is certain: The journey will bring Alexakis—and fans—to places where he’s yet to venture. It will be exciting to hear the sonic offspring of that pioneering voyage.

“A grinding splurge of defiant rock’n’roll graffiti” – Q Magazine

“Saint Agnes have created a unique cinematic sound and a rock ‘n’ roll Gothic image to match” – Daily Telegraph

“Fearsome London-based rockers Saint Agnes deliver menacing witchery… Imagine the darkest reaches of the White Stripes and The Kills, plus a load of twisted dreams and psychedelic trips, and you’re in the right ballpark. Warped, weird and a bit filthy, yes, but oh so tasty.” – Classic Rock

British garage-rock four piece Saint Agnes have unveiled their explosive new single ‘Welcome To Silvertown’,(listen here) the title track to their eagerly-awaited debut album – out March 3rd via Death Or Glory Gang Records. And following their run of recent sold out London headline shows they are also playing a South West UK tour.

Despite being a London based band now they have roots in the South and South West. This has prompted them to book a tour covering Southampton, Plymouth, St. Agnes, Exeter and Tavistock.

Vocalist and guitarist Kitty Arabella Austen who grew up in Tavistock says, “England is a small country but despite this bands seem to rarely make it to the South West. I spent my teens in Devon and we were starved for original bands coming through, so I’m redressing the balance!
We love it there; friendly people, wild audiences, good beer and you can surf on your days off. Witchcraft is rife as well, so we feel right at home.”

Self-produced, and engineered by Luke Oldfield (The Wytches, Uncle Acid & The Deadbeats), the album recording captures the true rebel heart and energy of the band. Welcome To Silvertown is an album that is musically unshackled and an accurate snapshot of the band’s ferocious intensity, fusing the menacing frenzie of rock with a dark, cinematic flare. Born in a dingy sub-zero flat, the album is rife with themes of wild fantasy, escapism, emotional fragility and the inside-outs of living in East London’s district of Silvertown.

Speaking of the new album, the band comment; “With the album, we wanted to transform everyday mundane events into moments of high drama in an attempt to better understand our own stories. We wanted to magnify and illuminate certain aspects of ourselves in order to see a little more clearly, and we wanted to create narratives that people could connect with and recognise as their own battles, their own feelings.”

Consisting of Kitty Austen (Vocals/Guitar/Keys), Jon James Tufnell (Vocals/Guitar), Ben Chernett (Bass) and Andy Head (Drums) – Saint Agnes have clocked up over 200 shows across the UK & Europe already. 2018 laid the foundations for what is set to be a breakout year for the band, playing the mainstage at Kendal Calling, receiving radio support from Steve Lamacq (BBC 6 Music) and John Kennedy (Radio X), as well as festival appearances across Europe and sold out headline shows at The Lexington and Borderline in London.

‘Welcome to Silvertown’ will become the album their fans can’t live without. Saint Agnes have taken the theory of letting fantasy run wild with riffs to match, and have made it their very own.

There’s a difficult to describe, yet timeless quality to certain songs that transcends genre or era. It’s something that you can’t fake or contrive and it’s what lies at the core of Skating Polly’s music. The multi instrumentalist duo of Kelli Mayo and Peyton Bighorse started their band in Oklahoma in 2009. They recorded their debut album Taking Over The World in 2010 and achieved instant acclaim from underground music icons like X’s Exene Cervenka (who produced 2013’s Lost Wonderfuls) and Beat Happening’s Calvin Johnson (who produced 2014’s Fuzz Steliacoom.) After the release of 2016’s The Big Fit, Veruca Salt’s co-frontwomen Louise Post and Nina Gordon reached out and said they wanted to write with the band. What started as a writing session ultimately became 2017’s New Trick EP. Now armed with a third member—Kelli’s brother Kurtis Mayo—the trio are about to release their latest full length, The Make It All Show.

The album is the culmination of a very busy year in which the band played over 100 shows, performed at major festivals like Riot Fest & The Capitol Hill Block Party, toured Europe with Kate Nash and reunited with Cervenka for two separate legs of X’s 40th anniversary tour. Speaking of Cervenka, the musical legend also co-wrote the song “Queen For A Day” with the band, a song that sees the trio stretching out both musically and lyrically. “It was great having both Peyton and Kurtis to consult with this time around and writing with Exene was also amazing because she’s one of our biggest influences,” Kelli explains. “We went into the studio right after a lot of touring, so we were pretty tight. We kind of internalized the last year, with the world going crazy and our personal lives taking their own weird turns and we let the songs be guided by that.” she continues. “This album sounds very Skating Polly, but our music’s evolved enough that you wouldn’t mistake any of these songs as being from a past record. The songs are definitely more complex.”

For The Make It All Show the group once again teamed up with producer Brad Wood (Liz Phair, Sunny Day Real Estate). “We have a really great rapport with Brad and this was definitely my favorite experience making a record so far,” says Bighorse. “Brad always knew how to capture the right tone because he understood the overall feeling we were going for.” Kelli agrees saying, “The record wouldn’t be what it is without Brad. He’d set something up and be like “this might work” and it would be perfect.”

Admittedly the female-driven alternative acts that inspired the band such as Veruca Salt, X, The Breeders, L7 and Babes In Toyland (the later of whom Skating Polly toured with in Europe) aren’t typical reference points for most of today’s up-and-coming bands, but maybe they should be. “The thing that we identify with in a lot of those bands is that they can be really aggressive and loud while also being super melodic,” Kelli explains, adding that the new dynamic in the band helped them be more expansive when it came to their sound and arrangements. “Everything happened very smoothly when Kurtis became part of the band. It just felt natural having him there and writing with him.” In typical Skating Polly fashion, the trio will still be switching instruments live, something that’s become a hallmark of their performances and one that opens up more possibilities with the additional instrumentation on The Make It All Show.

Speaking of live shows, Skating Polly really need to be seen in a club to fully grasp what makes them so special. “It can get pretty chaotic when we’re playing. People have said it feels like it could fall apart at any moment but in a good way,” Bighorse says with a laugh. “We try to make our music honest and engaging and I think that’s what drew us to people like Nina and Louise or Exene; you can probably guess a lot of the acts that we love, but we’re able to keep making music that always sounds like us,” Mayo explains. “We really try to make the songs the focus instead of trying to flaunt technical musical abilities,” adds Bighorse – and that honesty and optimism is why everyone from legendary musical figures as well as hardcore fans have gravitated toward Skating Polly’s music. The Make It All Show is the most fully realized work by Skating Polly yet and hints at an even brighter future for one of rock’s most promising acts.

It’s brash, unapologetic rock and I love it” – The Independent (spotlight feature)

“twists of humour and a measure of hope…propulsive, darkly beautiful” – Kerrang! ***

“fuses the sounds of Elastica and Dubstar for a delightful, mid nineties indie vibe” – The Sun ****

“an inspirational, motivating and sonically stunning record” – Tap The Feed

“a delight from beginning to end. An excellent record, delicate, of great beauty.” – Sound Of Violence (FR)

“Her incendiary blend of raw 90’s grunge with a more modernised indie rock sound is politically charged, brutally hard-hitting and shows off her prowess as a songwriter, musician and recording engineer.” The Modern Record

“Listen to Brace For Impact a few times and you’ll begin to appreciate the depth of songwriting talent, the humour and the constant dichotomy between self-confidence and self-loathing…She Makes War is about to make waves…because she is producing art on her terms which fits snugly with a modern social media savvy age. It’s also cos she’s a bloody great talent. Enough said.” – God Is In The TV

“Along with being both brutal and beautiful, Brace For Impact is honest…Like a true hero She Makes War lets us know that even when the quiet comes, we are strong. We are more than just the people we know. The places we go. We are important for the simple fact that we are who we are. We are strong and we all have the strength to carry on.” – Victim Of Sound

“Maybe existentialism and optimism theoretically shouldn’t go this well together, but by God they do…The key term defining She Makes War, it seems, is freedom; freedom to approach her work with a wide creative scope that allows her to say what she truly wants.” – Hysteria

DUMB + U.S. Highball & Order of the Toad

Dumb is the new smart. Don’t believe us? Look no further than this ridiculously prolific Vancouver quartet, who have somehow cracked the code on including quality with their quantity. Over the last two years, Dumb have self-released three albums of
quirky, frenetic post-punk. While others might go stale, however, the band seems to break new ground with each new idea.

Enter Seeing Green, the band’s first full-length for Mint Records. The album’s 14 tracks were produced by Jordan Koop (Wolf Parade, You Say Party, the Courtneys) at the Noise Floor on Gabriola Island, BC. While it’s the band’s first time working on
this relatively larger scale, Koop’s production has simply crystallized their ideas.

The result is a batch of songs that sound both urgent and timeless, referencing classic post-punk projects like DEVO, Pylon or the Mekons while placing them nicely within the pantheon of Canadian contemporaries like Ought, Fountain and Freak Heat Waves. Musically, Seeing Green’s jagged guitars and punchy rhythm section lay a perfect basis for their lyrics, all of which explore the inherent absurdity of modern life. As
frontman Franco Rossino says, “The album revolves around a confused and angry young person unknowingly being tossed around by the same western capitalist conditioning that we’ve all been raised on. Green in this sense refers to being a novice, as well as to money, envy, and growth. It’s meant to be somewhat of a self-aware exaggeration of some feelings in our every day lives that we often don’t want to admit to and may even lie to ourselves about.”

At times paranoid and other times exuberant,
Seeing Green dares you to dance and deconstruct. It’s a trim, explosive collection of songs that suggests these four will be
cranking out hits for years to come. It’s time to get Dumb.
