Mick Harvey returns in October to presenting songs from his four solo albums after a few years of live shows focussing on his Serge Gainsbourg interpretations and a world tour with PJ Harvey. The former-Bad Seed will join forces on a double bill with his close collaborator J.P. Shilo (Hungry Ghosts/Rowland S. Howard/The Blackeyed Susans) and a band including Glenn Lewis (Cambodian Space Project) on bass and Steve Shelley (Sonic Youth) on drums. Shilo will be performing material from his new album “Invisible You” due for European release in October while Harvey will take the opportunity to include selections from the recent album ‘The Fall and Rise of Edgar Bourchier and the Horrors of War’

J.P. Shilo first appeared on the scene in the 90s with his instrumental group Hungry Ghosts, quickly capturing the attention of the late Rowland S. Howard who produced their first LP, they soon found themselves invited to the Sonic Youth studios to record a follow up album entitled Alone, Alone; which one reviewer described as “…blessed with the ability to utter a million words with a single instrumental phrase and to turn a melancholy passage into a triumphant climax.” Since then he has been the “go-to” man for many solo artists looking for something different to complement their music. Working alongside Mick Harvey on the critically acclaimed Rowland S. Howard LP, Pop Crimes, JP’s unique approach and techniques, added a new dimension to Howard’s songs, furthering his reputation as a highly sensitive and sought after musician. A multi-instrumentalist who thinks outside the box, he has also lent his skills to creating the “sound” of numerous Australian luminaries albums, including Adalita Official’s award-winning debut solo album, Close Your Eyes and See LP from The Blackeyed Susans and five of Mick Harvey’s LPs, including the latest batch of Serge Gainsbourg interpretations, Delirium Tremens and Intoxicated Women to name just a few. He was recently commissioned by The City of Melbourne to create a new work for Melbourne Town Hall Grand Organ, Jubjoté was premiered on November 8th 2018.

For this special event, J.P. Shilo will be performing material from his upcoming LP – and will be joined by Steve Shelley & Glenn Lewis.

Steve Shelley is best known as the drummer of Sonic Youth. He currently records and tours with Thurston Moore, Spectre Folk, Howe Gelb, J.P. Shilo and Riviera Gaz (based in Sao Paulo, Brazil).
In the recent past he has recorded and/or toured with Yasmine Hamdan, Peter Walker and Mercury Rev, Hallogallo 2010 (with Neu’s Michael Rother), Sun Kil Moon, Disappears, emma tricca, Cat Power.
He runs several record labels including Vampire Blues and helps curate the Sonic Youth live archive on nugs.net.

“In a world that celebrates being rich and famous, there’s something purely powerful about being poor and nameless.”

I met Joel at a recent music conference in Montreal and was immediately taken with his disarming, soft melodic delivery born from a keen perception of the human condition. This understated authenticity is why you’ll find him on the fringes of something much deeper than modern indie-folk. In his quest to retain a certain humbled anonymity, Regina-based Joel Henderson has, in fact, made himself more noticeable than ever.

Though similar to his contemporaries with his wispy, shiver-worthy vocal tones reminiscent of Donovan Woods and Gregory Alan Isakov; Henderson’s stark vulnerability sets him apart, coupled with a deep lyrical poignancy. Since the release of Activity Book (2013), and the proceeding, stunningly beautiful and acclaimed Bravery (2016); Henderson has seen some notable milestones, including a recent publishing deal and several successful tours and showcases in Canada and Europe.

Henderson’s striking grasp of life’s complexities is mirrored by a pure modesty, allowing listeners to immerse themselves into the stories, songs and experiences of Poor Nameless Boy without pretence. With no desire to be seen as a brand or commodity, his humanistic proposition is entirely irresistible, and as a songwriter, effortlessly engaging.

Every element of Egyptian Blue’s fierce, uncompromising sound feels like hypnotism fuelled by psychosis. Their grinding riffs achieve a mesmeric power through brute repetition, while their rhythm section produces taut, nervous energy and intense post-punk grooves in equal measure.

If you discovered them through their recent track ‘To Be Felt’, which was supported by Huw Stephens, Jack Saunders, Steve Lamacq, John Kennedy and Tom Ravenscroft, you’ll connect with the dark mania that pulsates throughout their debut EP ‘Collateral Damage’. It’s under a new deal with Yala! Records, the label co-founded by former Maccabee Felix White and home to the likes of The Magic Gang and Willie J Healey.

Dual frontmen Andy Buss and Leith Ambrose first bonded over early Foals and The Maccabees and have played music together ever since. They’re the type of people you expect to find in an essential new band: two lifelong friends who share a seemingly telepathic connection.

They formed Egyptian Blue in their late teens, with Luke Phelps on bass. Initially practicing above a jewellery shop in their hometown of Colchester, they were the epitome of a band reacting to the mundanity of their surroundings. Early jams often devolved into marathon sessions of fourteen hours or more, made all the more chaotic by the amount of whisky they’d share.

“We got raided by the police a couple of times because we were playing ridiculously loud music at five am above a jewellers in the centre of town,” summarises Andy, as if it’s a rite of passage that everyone goes through.

“Our rehearsals were a joke,” sighs Leith, “but we thought we were taking it seriously.”

With life in Colchester growing stale, Egyptian Blue moved to Brighton – a place they agree was exciting because “it had a lot more to offer us as people and as musicians.” Another big moment came at a King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard gig. Seeing a band that well-drilled made them rethink the work ethic that their own project required.

Released late in 2017, their debut single ‘Cut Me A Hole’ was the first calling card for Egyptian Blue’s growing talents. Yet they’d soon be following a different path to that track’s psyche-tinged punk attack. When they returned almost a year later with ‘To Be Felt’, they sounded like a modernist take on Gang of Four’s seminal ‘Entertainment’ album filtered through Canadian post-punks Preoccupations.

They credit much of that recent transition in their sound to new drummer Isaac Ide. Not only has he allowed the band to push forwards by freshening up their dynamic, but he’s also formed a powerhouse partnership with Luke.

That direction continues on the ‘Collateral Damage’ EP, which was produced by Theo Verney (FUR, TRAAMS). Anxious, angsty and foreboding, the lead track and new single ‘Collateral’ is driven by Luke’s propulsive bass combined with tight percussion. Meanwhile Andy and Leith trade lyrics which explode with vitriol and recriminatory aggression.

Andy wrote the song after visiting a friend who suffers from severe social anxiety. “He told me he’d fallen in love with someone he met online,” he recalls,” but he was coming to terms with the realisation that they’d never be able to meet it person due to his anxiety. It kind of broke my heart.” In contrast, Leith’s verse explores the idea of letting someone down, but not wanting to hurt them in the process.

‘Collateral’ and another new song, the Birthday Party flavoured ‘Adderall’, were written in the same day and both simmer with barely controlled chaos. The EP is completed with by ‘Contain It’ and ‘To Be Felt’, both tracks which pick up that Gang of Four baton of driving bass and jagged guitars. Like the artwork that accompanies it, the EP is a magnetising collage of sounds.

The four songs are also inspired by snapshots of conversations heard during a night out. Or, as Ambrose notes, “The bitter end of the evening where people say something interesting. Or when someone says something that triggers negative thoughts in your head.”

“And the sort of thing you say and immediately regret,” interjects Andy.

Egyptian Blue’s connection with Yala! started when they supported Willie J Healey at Yala! club nights in Manchester and London. They’re now also confirmed to play the label’s stage at this summer’s All Points East festival. IDLES’ frontman Joe Talbot has also fallen under their spell, describing them as “fucking sick.”

For the first time in 34 years of presenting unique one-of-a-kind stage shows, Negativland performs radically new audio-visual versions of many Negativland fan-favorites that have never before been heard live. Negativland’s current performance project finds them teaming up with with electronic musician Wobbly, and “live cinema” video artist Steev Hise, to create a visually and sonically unique performance that reinvents favorite past and present dialog cut-ups, while showcasing Negativland’s homemade electronic noise-making devices that they call “Boopers.”

Boopers, in case you were wondering, are intentionally unstable homemade analog feedback boxes, first created in 1975 by David Wills, a founding member of Negativland.
By taking a simple clock radio amplifier and sending its output back into its input to create feedback, and then adding multiple transistors, capacitors, and resistors, along with various knobs and switches to unpredictably control and modulate the signal, the sound that emerges is wildly variable. This creates a dynamic where the Negativland member playing the Booper becomes a fellow collaborator with the device. Using as many as seven Boopers on stage at once (all based on Wills’ original design), Negativland further structures, manipulates, and augments these sounds with found voices, cut-up spoken word, ungainly pulsing rhythms, and live collaged visuals.

Please scroll down and read Negativland’s bio for more background on this unclassifi able and uniquely American experimental music and art group who were cutting up analog audio tape to “sample” long before the term existed.

Joy Crookes is 19 year old south London born songstress straddling soul, trip-hop and R&B. Half-Bengali/Half-Irish in heritage; Joy’s is a dexterous sound, which effortlessly showcases her melting pot of sonic influences. Joy balances the retro stylings of Sade with the millennial wit of Lily Allen – songs that aren’t afraid to be honest and raw, while also packing a political punch. She may be looking to the past, but smart, talented and strong, Joy Crookes is shaping the sound of the future.

Madding crowds may have found their bounce to the beat of ‘Bad Blood’s post-punk groove but Working Men’s Club will defy all expectation with their eagerly anticipated follow-up. Forcing backs off the wall and deeper onto the dancefloor, electric stomper ‘Teeth’ possesses enough bite to set pearly whites on edge and induce a wildly ecstatic feeling that’s anything but comfortable.

“It is a metaphor,” teases the band’s singer, guitarist and beat-maker, Sydney Minsky-Sargeant. “It could be about going insane or what you see, what you think you feel inside, a lot of things… put through a drum machine… basically we just want to confuse the fuck out of people, in a good way!”

For Syd, alongside fellow Club members Giulia Bonometti, Jake Bogacki, and recently recruited bassist Liam Ogburn, the last 12 months has seen the 4-piece buckle up for a meteoric rise that’s been a hell of a ride. “Signing to Heavenly was a big deal for us,” offers Jake. “We’ve worshiped the label and its bands for a long time so it’s nice to be part of the family. It’s a culture; we’re all running in parallel.”

Shows with Fat White Family and The Brian Jonestown Massacre, and a day of packed-out Great Escape appearance have paved the way for the band as they hone their rhythm ahead of Bluedot, Manchester Psychfest, Latitude and Manchester International Festival later this summer, before a tour with Bodega and their first headline tour though October and November.

After ‘Bad Blood’ received early support from Steve Lamacq, demand brought about a third repressing of their debut 7”, and it topped the vinyl charts; giving rise to a band subconsciously making us all slaves to the rave. “We do this because we love it.” says Syd. “But it’s not about us, we’re just faces. Working Men’s Club is about the music, the vibe, and that feeling, forcing you to move. Anyone can join.”

Mipso is born from North Carolina’s broad range of disparate musical influences, their distinctly unique sound an undeniable alchemy of the historical musical traditions of the rural south and their progressive home of Chapel Hill.

A discernible and rising force in the upstart musical genre known as Americana, Mipso’s music is lush and forward moving. A tender, harmony-laden river runs through the band’s core, but the rocky outcroppings change with every album outing. Appalachia melds with modern alt-country, hints of folk-rock are leavened with a sly and subversive sense of humour, and underneath it all is a genuine and moving passion for the ever-evolving traditions of Americana. With the recent release of the band’s fifth album, Edges Run (April 2018/Anti-Fragile Music), Mipso continues the complex dance of looking back and moving forward with grace and beauty.
