Dave Haslam discusses his life and career as a DJ and writer. In the mid-80s he was running a fanzine, and staging shows at the Boardwalk, where he gave debut Manchester shows to the likes of Primal Scream, the Pastels, Laibach and Spacemen 3. His weekly DJing residency at the Haçienda began in May 1986. He played over 450 times at the legendary club, including on the last night the Haçienda was open; June 28th 1997.
He has since DJ’d worldwide, from Berlin to Detroit, Paris to Peru – and written five books, including ‘Life After Dark: A History of British Nightclubs &; Music Venues’, and his autobiography ‘Sonic Youth Slept On My Floor’ (acclaimed by Gilles Peterson as “the best book of 2018”).
His latest project is ‘Art Decades’, is a limited edition series of small format books about subjects including Sylvia Plath, vinyl collecting, Courtney Love, and the artist Keith Haring.
