2018 marks the 15th anniversary of Great Lake Swimmers. Over seven albums, multiple EPs, live broadcasts, and reissues, the Toronto-based project led by singer-songwriter Tony Dekker has established itself as a beloved indie folk act in their native Canada and beyond. The CBC has called them “a national treasure” while their music has taken them around the world, sharing a sound that is at once familiar and distinct, using the tools of folk music as the starting point to delve deeper.

It’s this contrast and evolution that brings them to their latest release, The Waves, The Wake – a metaphor for the future ahead, and the past trailing behind. Abandoning the acoustic guitar, this new collection of songs sees the group branching out to include new sounds such as harp, lute, pipe organ, woodwinds, congas and marimbas, alongside the more familiar flecks and chimes of the banjo, piano, and 12-string electric guitar.

HED PE + Davey Suicide, Hemlock & Monkey Puzzle

December 6th, 2018

Originally based in Huntington Beach, CA, (Hed) p.e. was founded in 1994 by frontman Jahred, whose goal was to fuse the region’s long-standing punk rock heritage with G-funk-inflected hip-hop. He was shortly joined by bassist Mark who has remained alongside the band until present day. The line up is currently rounded out by guitarist Jaxon and drummer Trauma.

(Hed)p.e was snatched up by Jive Records early in its career, but it wasn’t until the year 2000 when they released the album “broke” that they received mainstream success. It was this album that solidified them as a mainstay in the rock and metal community.

(Hed)p.e. released its third album “Blackout” in 2003 which continues to be their most successful album to date. The group is infamous for changing the image and style of the band and music from release to release. Infusing moments of punk, metal, rap, reggae, and rock into their very eclectic yet precise sound.

Many have asked what the name (Hed) p.e. means and stands for. According to vocalist Jahred, “The name (Hed) p.e. is a name I came up with which basically means our consciousness is connected to the planet and the planet is evolving, therefore, we as her children, evolve with her. The “p.e.” originally was defined as PLANETARY EVOLUTION, and sometimes morphs to PLANET EARTH and back, but both carry the same message, the (Hed) is the symbol for consciousness. WE ARE ON THE MOTHERSHIP!”

Despite many bands and peers from their genre, (Hed)p.e. has never taken a break from releasing albums and touring, which has enabled them to survive and meet with very strong independent success over the years. As a member that has been with the band from inception, bassist Mark attributes this to a passion for music and for playing in (Hed)p.e. for over 2 decades. “I moved from NewCastle England to pursue music in the United States and have never looked back.” says Mark. “Our goal is to be a band that can connect with fans for decades to come, much like bands like the Rolling Stones have been able to do for over four generations of music.”

Staying true to the (Hed)p.e. standard of change and growth both personally and musically, the new album “Evolution” takes the band back to their metal and underground roots they grew up on as kids. With tracks like “One More Body” and “No Tomorrow” holding down the metal and aggressive front, to the Led Zeppelin infused track “2 Many Games”, this album delivers every style imaginable and even rounds the album out with three reggae inspired/infused album closers.

2018 is destined to be a year of emancipation for Arab music’s relationship with electronica. As well as the growing interest among western artists (led by Acid Arab) for North African and Eastern sounds, a veritable galaxy of local producers are delving back into the musical heritage of their homelands and reinventing traditional sounds with the help of new electronic production tools. A case in point is AMMAR 808, the project of Tunisian musician Sofyann Ben Youssef, who specialises in reworking raï and chaabi arrangements using a Roland TR-808. Brimming with rapid, dense beats, twangy keys and compressed darbukas, this self-proclaimed ‘North-African futurist’ embodies the new-found vigour and enthusiasm of the contemporary music scene in the Maghreb.

In doing so, AMMAR 808 is treading a fine yet invigorating line between tradition and modernity. Accompanied by Tunisian vocalist Cheb Hassen Tej, Gnawa musician Mehdi Nassouli and celebrated Algerian singer Sofian Saidi, this live performance promises to be an intense experience for all lovers of Arab music. Through a subtle mix of oriental poetry and dance vibrations, get ready to be transported to a freshly united and proud Maghreb that is energetically represented by this new generation of musical ambassadors.

Wesley Fuller (1965 Records) + Black Cat Revue

December 3rd, 2018

Wesley Fuller, the Perth-born, Melbourne-based power pop boy wonder, has announced details of the release of his debut album. Inner City Dream will be released on 1965 Records on Friday 22nd September 2017.

Very much a ‘solo’ affair, the album was written, recorded, produced and mixed at various studios, including his
own home set-up, around Melbourne.

Fuller has also announced details of the release of the first track from the album, #1 Song, a track which sees him turning his observational eye towards the far off universe that is the upper echelon of modern pop – “I think everyone in the scene knows to a certain extent that it’s all bullshit. So why take it too seriously? You’ve got some artists with 20 tracks in the Top 30. The gap between the big stars and the indie bands are worlds apart,” he explains. “There’s really no money in music at all unless you’re at the very top. To get there you have to compromise your dignity and be prepared to release some pretty pedestrian shit.”

Coming a year on from the brash debut EP, Melvista, Inner City Dream features twelve tracks of swirling psych, jangly pop and punchy, crunchy glam that show off Fuller’s broadening sonic palette and his progression as a writer and producer.

He explains: “Melvista was really my first solo expedition and I was learning as I went along. I think by the time I came to record the album I had a better technical knowledge of what I was doing. There’s probably a wider span of influences on the album. I wanted to showcase every aspect of my sound.”

As well as his steady diet of 70s junk shop glam and bubblegum, Fuller’s regular DJ slots around the Melbourne
rock scene’s favourite dive bars produced a new fascination for the polyrhythmic ways of Talking Heads during their late-70s/early-80s peak. It inspired Fuller to make tunes of his own that would make people boogie.

Lyrically, Fuller has also progressed. Moving on from the teenage lust of much of Melvista, Inner City Dream presents the worldview of a young man trying to come to terms with his place, both physically and symbolically. Fuller has already started demoing tracks and playing with ideas for his second album, though it may be some
time off. The concepts on Inner City Dream and world events have started him thinking about what else could be
around the corner. “I think the next few years will be a very interesting time for pop music. The world is in a crazy state right now and it feels as though something will have to give pretty soon. There’s plenty to write about. But do people want
to hear protest songs or do they want to escape reality? Perhaps there’s a new sound around the corner. Who will turn on the light?”
