Sunset Rollercoaster is a 6-piece synth-pop band from Taiwan, including members: Tseng Kuo-Hung (vocal/guitar), Chen Hung-Li (bass), Lo Tsun-Lung (drum), Wang Shao-Hsuan (keyboard), Huang Shih-Wei (drum pads/percussion) and Huang Hao-Ting (Saxophone). The band is known for their 80s style of breezy and chilled out music with incredible live performances. Being one of the most romantic bands from Asia, fans nicknamed the band’s genre as “pregnantal rock.”

The band’s debut album “Bossa Nova” was self-released in 2011, with immediate critical acclaim. After majorly touring in Asia, including playing at Summer Sonic Festival in Japan, the band went on a hiatus, where each member focused on other musical projects.

In 2015, Sunset Rollercoaster reunited and released the ground-breaking EP “Jinji Kikko” in the following year. The band then toured around Asia with sold out shows in China, Japan, Korea, Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore and Taiwan. They also went on the first US tour, in which the band played at SummerStage Festival in Central Park.

The band’s latest full-length album “Cassa Nova” was released in 2018, followed by a world tour in Asia, North America and Europe. In the same year, Sunset Rollercoaster joined Rogue Agency and ATC Live to expand its touring presence.

With more than 7,000,000 plays on streaming platforms and being featured on Audiotree, Boston Herald, Resident Advisor and Bandcamp, Sunset Rollercoaster is ready to take off in 2019 with a new EP and a new round of world tour

Spanish blues group Guadalupe Plata are set to release their fifth album, titled Three Demons, next month. You can watch a video for lead track ‘Corralera Del Veneno’ here > https://thequietus.com/articles/26233-guadalupe-plata-new-album-listen.

The band describe the album as “a new attempt to go further and beyond, in our crusade for regression and the idea of creating our own personal ‘Gris Gris’.” The album sees them tracing back to more traditional folk music from their home country, channeling ceremonial, ‘un-Christian’ sounds.

They continue: “We chose to delve into the sound of the wash tub as the main bass sound, a drum amplified by the minimum number of mics so that it would sound as natural as possible and an electric guitar plugged directly into an amplifier, no intermediaries that would disturb the peace in the monastery.

“We dared to add some new instruments to the mix in some songs, such as a bottle of anise, a beat-up bandurria and some sounds made by old doors, in order to add a little bit of flavour of deep Spain.”

Sometimes in improvised music there can be a distance between listener and players, a sense you’re sitting back and admiring their interplay and abstraction – but with Szun Waves’ second album, you’re right in there with them, inside the playing, experiencing the absolute joy the three musicians feel as they circle around each other, exploring the spaces they’ve opened up.

The three members already have sparkling pedigrees of their own. Norfolk’s Luke Abbott is well known for his explorations of the zones between pure ambience and the leftmost fringes of club culture. With Portico Quartet and Circle Traps, Jack Wyllie has been in the vanguard of UK fusions of jazz, classical and club music. Australian drummer Laurence Pike has likewise found a unique voice in improvised and experimental music-making, whether in the bands Triosk or PVT, or as a solo artist (his debut album Distant Early Warning was released in March 2018).

The trio’s musical relationship has grown naturally and steadily, and it shows. From Wyllie adding shimmering sustained sax notes to Abbott’s gorgeous ambient pieces in 2013, Szun Waves emerged when Pike was added to the mix, energising the sound but still keeping its levitational qualities. Their 2016 self-released debut album hit a natural groove – it was a “proof of concept” as Abbott says – and now they’re in a place of pure spontaneity: New Hymn To Freedom is a document of six entirely live improvisations – “no edits or overdubs” – and its title couldn’t be more apt.

In some senses this is jazz, and in its ripples, sparkles and waves of rhythm will certainly chime with anyone turned on by Don Cherry, Alice Coltrane or Sun Ra. But just as much it’s in the British electronic tradition of artists like James Holden (in whose studio the first album was recorded), Four Tet and Nathan Fake that Abbott has emerged from – only now instead of his synths echoing Norfolk’s wide open pastoral landscapes, they’re depicting altogether more celestial vistas. Indeed, the drifting ecstasies of this record take you to dimensions that only the most genre-free musicians can reach: you might hear hints of Can, Ryuichi Sakamoto or even Liars.

But really, this isn’t the sound of any influence other than the influence the three players are having on each other, and how happy that makes them. “It still feels to me like a mystical adventure when we play,” says Abbott, “but there’s a musical language developing between us, we’re starting to make more sense together.”

From the basements of East London,Teeth Of The Sea have forged forward intrepidly over twelve years, four albums and two EPs to become heralded as the UK’s most adventurous and unclassifiable outfit in the realm of the psychedelic. As inspired by virulent garage-driven noise as austere avant-garde experimentation and driven by soundtrack atmospherics, jazz exploration and electronic dissonance alike, they’ve outgrown their original influences (Butthole Surfers, Eno, Goblin, Aphex Twin, Throbbing Gristle) to forge a sound both richly celestial and acidically synapse-scorching.

It’s a journey that’s taken them to European festivals like Roadburn, Milhoes De Festa, Eindhoven Psych Lab and Incubate, seen them perform specially curated live soundtrack work in Romania, Cork and CERN, and led them to devastate UK events like Supersonic, Supernormal, Latitude, Bestival and Green Man – all the while forging forward heedlessy into chaos and fresh discovery anew. With a fifth album slated for release in early 2019 and set to further terrify and transfix in ways never heard before, Teeth Of The Sea continue to blaze forth with enlightenment and irreverence to the fore. Who knows where they’ll arrive, but be prepared to brace yourself and bear witness.
