Grunge-fuelled indie via London, Galway, and Berlin.“…powerful…” -Dork“…a dreamlike sound that conjures up ethereal imagery.” -Wonderland“…ear-pleasing webs of noise with powerful political ideas.” -The Line of Best Fit“…biting musicality…” -Clash“…waves of heavy percussion and intertwining riffs.” -DIY”…emotional…” -Stereogum“…stunning…” -Noisey“…simply sublime…” -The Line of Best FitWith nods to Warpaint, Ian Sweet, and Sleater Kinney, HAVVK produce a haunting and dynamic soundthat steers the listener from moments of immersive shoe-gaze to thrashing punk rock, all fronted by a soaring, bewitching vocal.HAVVK originally formed in London in 2014, and relocated to Berlin two summers ago. The band initially evolved around Julie Hawk’s solo project which was produced by their guitarist Matt Harris. Wanting to break away from the singer-songwriter niche, they redeveloped as something with more atmosphere, punch, and political edge than before. Their first EP, ‘HAVVK’, was produced by Dimitri Tikovoï (Placebo, The Horrors) and mixed by Catherine Marks (Wolf Alice). Their second EP ‘She Knows’ was self-produced alongside Belfast native Rocky O’ Reilly (And So I Watch You From Afar). Noizze said it featured what “could be the best opening track to any rock release.” In the close of 2017, the band released their double A-Side vinyl, “Can’t Explain // Below”, that juxtaposes the two sides of HAVVK’s distinctive sound. Vents Magazine described the record as a “gritty slice of indie grunge” met with “shimmering delicacy.”Since moving to Berlin, they’ve supported And So I Watch You From Afar and The Drums at The Lido, as well as appearing on stages at Liverpool Soundcity, Other Voices, Hard Working Class Heroes, and The Great Escape. They’vealso performed alongside Bitch Falcon, Wyvern Lingo, The Altered Hours, Party Fears, and Saint Sister as well as touring with BARQ, ELM, and Harbouring Oceans. Amongst their online supporters are Gold Flake Paint, Nialler9, Noisey, Stereogum, Wonderland, DIY, and The Line Of Best Fit. HAVVK’s singles have had air-time on BBC 6 Music from Lauren Laverne, Tom Robinson, Steve Lamacq and Chris Hawkins, as well as appearing on RTE Radio 1, Today FM, XFM, Absolute Radio, 2XM, Amazing Radio, 98FM, and Dublin CityFM.In addition to their own music, the band have also founded their label, Veta Records, working with acts such as Maria Kelly, DYVR, and Sive. In 2017, Julie Hawk co-founded SelfMade, a platform to explore DIY music in Ireland through performance, discussion, and art. She also produced an illustration series, Female Fronted Drawn Together, celebrating women in music.
